Bum Marketing Versus Internet Real Estate

I've made the mistake that many newbie marketers make and I've set up more websites than I can handle successfully.

I originally started with bum marketing a little over 3 months ago. This month I've made 8 affiliate sales from the work I put in 3 months ago.

I know that it takes a while to see results from your efforts and that I should probably wait a while before getting discouraged with my own internet property. I know that the reason people buy domain names and build websites on them is for one or more of three reasons. Reason one: to build a list. Reason two: to sell their own product. Reason three: to build and flip the website. (Forgive me if I've left out a reason, but I see these as the basic motives behind building a website)

I know that my concern is pre-mature, but I fear that when the 3 month mark is up for my websites, that I still won't have generated any sales from them . . . and that my bum marketing campaigns will still be rolling strong without effort. It obviously takes a lot more time and effort to build, SEO, and advertise your own site as opposed to pointing your advertising efforts to an already SEO optimized site with your affiliate links.

All of my sites run on WordPress and I can't help but wonder sometimes if my efforts wouldn't have been better spent forgetting trying to build a list, and instead just going for the set it and forget it sales that I've been getting through bum marketing.

I think this is more of a rant than anything. I'm low on cash now, and though I'm happy that I'm making some money from my IM efforts . . . it is a little unsettling that the money I make comes from something that I put in tons less effort than I have been with my own websites . . . which have generated nothing but Adsense income since they've been up.

I think a general question for this topic would be, have you made more money from bum marketing or from your own internet real estate? I know the majority will probably respond that the most money is in your own website, but I've read a few threads on here where people have done amazing things with bum marketing alone.
