Does Anyone Know TheTruth Behind The Duplicate Content Debate?

I was wondering if any Warriors know anything about the duplicate content debate. I am venturing off to article marketing and I worry about submitting the same content to more then one directory, because I have heard that Google has strict rules against this and could possibly drop you listing.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Karen

    Karen,

Here you go: Submitting the same article to multiple directories is NOT considered to be duplicate content by Google.

It's when you post the same article on multiple pages OF ONE SITE that Google considers duplicate content.

    The history of duplicate content.

Back in the early days of SEO up until around 1997/98 (Google) you could have a page about making money online and your title would be How To Make Money Online the heading would be the same. The first paragraph would start off with this too and so on.

One day, someone figured out that you could have an entire page with nothing but make money online, make money online...just like meta keywords.

That didn't look very good to the human eye so the trick was to have an article for the human reader and under the table that held your article would be very long list of your keywords repeated over and over again but this time the keywords text would be the same color as the background.

Invisible to the naked eye and the little search bots didn't have a clue so you could do this and be number one at anything.

Then the invisible keyword text wars began. It was horrible. Every page you went to had a table with an article and about 3 pages long invisible text.

The images all had these long "alt" tags that were nothing more than an entire string of keywords. It all started looking so bad that "doorway pages" were created to hold enough keywords to put War and Peace to shame with a redirect to the "real" page.

One of the first "smart bots", Inktomi at HotBot realized that the only way to deal with this problem was to incorporate some sort of way to recognize unnecessary duplicate content. They started coming up with counting programs and formulas for determining meaningful content.

The first thing they did was to drop your site if you had an unrealistic number of the same words over and over. Then they went to work on invisible text.

Meanwhile, across town, a couple of fellas took this idea and ran with it and Google was born.

They are still tinkering and improving on that original idea.

Also, for the most part, if Google comes across duplicate content on YOUR site, it simply indexes the version it sees as most relevant, and ignores the other. It rarely "penalizes" you for it, unless you're blatantly trying to manipulate Google.

Duplicate Content is a Myth! There is no google penalty and this has been proven to be fact.

    * You can post your articles without changing them to 100,000 places if you wish.. This is called syndication.

    * You can use the same content on your domain name, this is known as working smart.. I do in fact have duplicate content on my domain and my authors benefit from this big time.

    * No google does NOT pick the article they thing should be on top, you can dominate google's entire front page with the same exact article. Many of us do just that ...

What google does not want you to do is create the same exact pages with the same exact content over and over on your same domain. Many did this years ago and they was called doorway pages, the idea was to increase your rankings. It worked until the search engines got smarter. This is what google frowns upon.

to answer this question, all you have to do is put yourself in the shoes of a search engine. A user arrives and searches for 'make money online'. Remember, you are a search engine. Would you rather show them...

There may be no explicit 'penalty' in the general case (although I know for a fact that if a google operative manually reviews a site and decides it exists solely to game the engine, they will de-index it), but the end result is the same.

If you don't understand about how important 'user experience' is to modern search engines, you need to retake the 101. And ultimately, simply ask yourself this:-

Other things being equal, what would YOU rather own? A site rammed full of unique and interesting content, or a site stuffed with syndicated articles from ezines???

Or even this:- If a site composed entirely of duplicate content is OK, why not just keep 'cloning' a site that supposedly makes you money? After all, if 1 duplicate site will make you $X, surely 2 such sites will make you $X x 2

Shame it doesn't work like this in reality, of course...

yes, of course, I 'dominate' myself, for longer tail key phrases that make some money. But...

the fact remains that the more money you can make from dominating a keyphrase, the tougher the competition will be for that phrase. It's simplicity itself to 'dominate' for some random string of gibberish, or a 10 word combo, because when there's nothing else to offer up, search engines offer you WHATEVER they have, INCLUDING duplicates.

Which is why I was wondering if you'd like to show us some sites composed completely of duplicate content that rank for... oh, I don't know... "credit Cards" or something like that.

And if you find one, we can all have a look to see why it's dominating, because it will be DESPITE the duplicate content, not BECAUSE of it

Well we all know duplicate content means having the same article published at your own website and not at other different article directories. So this means that you could have exact same copies of an article all over the net. Yes, maybe only one article will show up in a search. But... a different article (exact same version) could show up for a completely different searched keyword phrase so there's some benefit too.

    • Hi All very interesting topic. I am sure there is no duplicate content penalty but one cant deny Jon Alexander. Either its true what he says or it will be. Simply because it makes sense. MY personal experience is also that its mostly one of the duplicated results that ranks high and the others don't.

In any case I would say that there are a lot of people that want to post articles because they get indexed and provide relevant content from high PR sites with BL's to the sourcepage. Thats also my main concern.

      I couldn't care less if the article itself ranks high as long as the link gets indexed and is valued. So my question to you all is ;

If I would post the same article to lets say 50 sites all with the same link linking back to my sourcepage, would google eventually index them all and value them?

that's correct. The 'duplicate content issue' is very silly, people are arguing about semantics, not anything procedural or real.

A 'penalty' implies a definitive action taken as punishment for some infraction. That can and does happen, from my direct experience, but only in *extreme* cases, not generally because someone syndicated an article or 100.

Having said that, what happens in practice is that the duplicate content won't do you much good. Obviously. So whether you call it a 'penalty', or a 'downside', or something else, if the result is the same, what is there to argue about? If you're dead, murdered, killed or slaughtered, you're still... dead. I know - let's all call it the 'duplicate content Penguin' from now on, and perhaps this thread will be the last.

Arguing against the fact that using duplicate content is losing its efficacy suggests that the person believes either that search engines don't care what they show users, or aren't smart enough to compare two strings, or both.

I'll ask again. You're a search engine. What would you rather show a visitor looking for 'make money online'?

Thank you for this link but it redefines the general I learned lately in that duplicate content is only applicable if on your own site and it doesn't matter if on 100's of other sites providing it is you original.

In the beginning of the article it is basically saying that doing this is

"deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic"

and at the end of the article

"If you find that another site is duplicating your content by scraping (misappropriating and republishing) it, it's unlikely that this will negatively impact your site's ranking in Google search results pages."

Now if this is the law then I will revert back to my practice of sending out spinned articles as that word "unlikely" is of great concern here.

Which goes back to what I said about "doorway" pages....

As for Spun articles, as I have always said and I will always say. You can spin your articles or not this is your choice. Unlike those so many "spinner" websites I do not try to push my product based on trying to scare people into thinking they "must" spin their articles.

Yes my site is way more than just a spinner, matter fact the spinner is only a small part of my site and it's tools. I refuse though to try and scare someone into thinking they must spin articles.

I got an email yesterday from a WF user here who was under the impression that he "must" spin his articles due to duplicate content penalyty. He got this idea from content boss because thy way they have their "sales copy" on the site.

My answer to him was the same as it is to anybody else that ask. We spin articles for the many benefits and not because we are trying to trick google or any other search engine.

        The benefits Of Spun Articles:

        * More publishers will pickup your article and republish it because it is not the same as 10,000 other articles that other publishers have posted.

        * You can use them to create PLR packages and sell them.

        * You can use them to create short reports for opt-ins on your site.

        * You can use them to install a 2nd blog on your site for the purpose of boosting up your main site/blog.

        * You can use them to create PDF documents and upload them to document sharing sites.

        * Plus many more benefits...

The user thanked me for correcting him and taking the time to propery answer his questions.

So while duplicate content penalty is in fact a myth (on your site or on other sites) We must also decide for ourseleves if spinning an article is worth the benefits or not because the fact remains it is out choice to spin those articles or not.

As for if "I was a search engine" and what results would I show. This does not matter one bit to me because the fact is "I am NOT a search engine". The search engines are going to do what they want and when or how they want to do it. It' that simple. We can speculate all day long on what we think or feel a search engine should do or does do but it will not change anything.

Search engines will continue to evolve and change on a constant basis and there is nobody that will ever fully figure them out...

The best you can do is test it out for your own self and your own market. Do what you feel is best for you and your business and not what someone else thinks is best for you and your business.

          James,
          I have a suggestion

Let us do a joint experiment.

          1) We register 2 domains in the same niche
          2) We have 10 articles written and submitted without being spun to all the directories that will except them on the one domain
          3) We take the same 10 articles and rewrite to be submitted in a spun format to UAW etc. and point them to the other domain

          Then we monitor the results.

          From myside I can offer;

I will buy the 2 domains or you can buy one and host them on my server, I am a member @ UAW, have Magic article submitter/rewriter and big mikes article submitter. I have not tried your service so not sure how it works

We can do a joint CB niche that does well and share the profits or just put some content on the site and monitor the result.

I cannot write articles so need help

If you interested let me know as the result could be of great value

Of course no one 'needs' to spin. It's about getting maximum 'bangs per buck'. No one 'needs' to spell check either. In fact, no one 'needs' to use article marketing at all. But if you DO, the fact remains, in this day and age, you get better results with DIFFERENT articles than you get with zillions of identical copies. I don't know why you bother to try and refute this - search engines exist for that very purpose - to organize the myriad items of data out there into some kind of useable form. Last time I looked, Google had indexed rather more than 4 billion copies of one article.

As for you not caring what Google think or do, I can't say I'm particularly surprised.

Some people, however, believe in 'knowing your enemy'. And while I don't personally regard Google as an enemy, I do have sufficient respect for them that I want to know as much as I possibly can about them to make my own life easier.

What you write tends to make me think you believe that either search engines don't care what they serve up to their customers, or they can't compare a couple of strings?

            Jon,
            I think you misunderstand ....

            1. Search Engines care about quality "to an extent"

            2. I am a developer of over 15 years dude, I know the search engines can tell the difference in content. Matter fact they can do more than you know... but as I said you misunderstand.

            My point is this

            * You do not have to spin content and you can produce the same results, it may be in a different way but still the same results.

            * You should test for yourself, this is the huge part you are missing... Instead of trying to convince people to turn your way, let them test for themseleves.

            * Many do in fact preach you must spin articles and it is this kind of marketing tactic that I am against. Yes content boss does it, yes jetspinner does it, yes uaw does it, and ect... Just read their sales copy. I understand marketing but outright telling lies to get sales to me is unethical.. BUT THAT IS MY OPINION!

Ok so you not taking up my offer. I do agree with you on this point. I have a site that is getting good traffic and rank also well for a site I did using my own words posting daily result on a product I tried. Total true unique content as all my own writing in my bad English and not one article submitted to any directory.

On a second note I do use UAW and can show the results. With my first site only using 1 article I got better results than the pic on the site showing traffic stats.

James I don't know how your system works but as soon as I have time
I am going to run a test like I said. I will signup with your system and using a combination of yours UAW, no spinning, spinned articles I will write a report with my findings.

Also UAW dont actaully "spin" the article but post different article with different rewritten chapters so it is not the same as content boss and the likes and that is why I think you get a better presentable article posted

Seems you two guys are always at each other with this duplicate content stuff.

    The Myth of Duplicate Content

Many people think that duplicate content that exists on other website should not be used on your website, or it will be penalized by Google...

    This is so not true!

If Google do that, many news site and blogs that shows such information will be penalized! However, we still find many duplicate source for news and trendy event.

How about pure duplicate content site?

Yes, pure duplicate content site might get filtered! Especially new sites without trust rank!

When you first build a new site, try to use unique contents, because Google is very skeptic about new sites. You must show unique content for 2 months and build high PR links to get trust rank.

Once you have enough unique content and gain enough trust, you can start to post duplicate content as you wish, and backlinks to it!

    This is how autoblog works...

    The Truth of Duplicate Content

So, duplicate content doesn't exists? Certainly not!

Duplicate content exists in 2 ways:

    1. Google SERP result - Google will only show 1 result in their top 10 SERP per article from all duplicated content sites. How Google determine to show the content will greatly depended on how many links each duplicated article received! And certainly the site profile theme would help Google to determine too...

    2. Google may decrease your ranking if too many duplicated posts on your website, I mean the same article posted twice or more...! If the same article exists in many places within the same domain, Google might only show one, and if too many duplicate articles on your site, Google may actually decrease traffic to your site!

Hope this post clear things up!

TheImDude - No honestly I do not have the time... This is something that I have already spent countless hours testing. Now unlike many I go after highly competitive keywords and not ones that have little advertising but many searches. The ones I normally go after have many searches and many advertisers, yes I am crazy but it works for me...

Added: To be honest with you I do not advertise or market any affiliate stuff.. I have 1 product listed on my site right now only because I know and trust John Yeo. I do not advertise anything but my own products and services though.

      BIG Mike-

Hi, I see now why they call you "BIG Mike"

I think my problem is that I use and try to many options instead of sticking to one but I do seems to get confused sometimes with all the different options offered all the time. I have six of your software products and played with one but not using so any other you may call me a fool I don't mind.

Think I will sit down and choose an option and stick to it.

Going of topic Mike when will the version of your article submitter be ready with the option to spin the body of the article?

Guys, here's a page on duplicate content right from google. Please read it if you're interested in knowing the full truth on this issue from a RELIABLE source:

Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Deftly dealing with duplicate content

A few excerpts that might mean something to a few of you:

"Why does Google care about duplicate content?
Our users typically want to see a diverse cross-section of unique content when they do searches. In contrast, they're understandably annoyed when they see substantially the same content within a set of search results."

"What does Google do about it?
During our crawling and when serving search results, we try hard to index and show pages with distinct information."

"In short, a general awareness of duplicate content issues and a few minutes of thoughtful preventative maintenance should help you to help us provide users with unique and relevant content. "

I think if you're really using scraped or PLR content, you have top rankings, and you're getting lots of free traffic from the search engines (esp when you claim you have all 10 spots taken up on google with your same one article for a popular search term), you better run right out and buy yourself a lottery ticket because you're lucky and then some.

Google almost never penalizes a site even if the duplicate content is on one site. They say so over and over again in their guidelines and at their forums. What they do say is that if the duplicate content appears to be there in order to trick their search engine into awarding an artificially high position in the SERPs, then Google may penalize your site or remove it completely from Google. Otherwise, they will just pick the occurrence of the content that they think is most suitable for a particular search phrase.

Here's exactly what Google says about duplicate content within one site:

"Duplicate content on a site is not grounds for action on that site unless it appears that the intent of the duplicate content is to be deceptive and manipulate search engine results."

That page also gives a few examples like you won't be penalized for having a long copyright explanation of 75 words at the bottom of all 200 of your pages at one site. Google would prefer that you shorten it or simply link to a separate copyright page but they won't remove your site from their SERPs because of it. If someone happened to search for a phrase within your copyright footer, Google would simply choose one page to display and ignore the others.

The point to remember from that page though is that Google does not bring its wrath down upon anyone unless they feel that you are trying to be deceptive and manipulate the SERPs. Apply that principle to any question you have about what is and isn't ok with Google and you will probably be fine.

Exactly, the reason why I said "doorway pages" as many did abuse these years ago and turned them into nothing but the same page over and over just targeting 1 different keyword on each. Some had 1,000's of these doorway pages.

As I already posted though, nobody will ever fully understand the search engines.. not only google but any major search engine / small niche search engines. Not even google is going to fully release to you how they work or do things...

It is always best to test for "yourself" ...

    Hi Karen,

There is so much good information just from the answers on this thread alone. I think Big Mike said it best that "nobody but Google knows what Google is doing" (well, that might not be exactly what he said). But is right that it is just common sense. Sure Google won't penalize you for throwing the same thing all over the net, but it probably won't fill up the top few pages of the search engines.

Google wants to show you the most "relevant" results for what you are searching for. It wouldn't make sense for search engines to show the same "article" that you submitted to 100 sites and list them all on the top 10 pages.

Rick B nails it in my opinion. Duplicate content is really associated with content on your own site....and even then, it's only if Google thinks it might be some kind of deception of the search engines. In the end putting the same thing on multiple pages of your website probably won't hurt, but certainly ain't going to help either.

Only duplicate content on your own site can penalize you. There's an indisputable logic to this answer that should overcome all other arguments:

If duplicate content on other sites could harm you then all a competitor would need to do is to copy your content and post it all over the web under pseudonyms.

It's a situation that's similar to getting links from disreputable sites. It won't help you but it surely won't hurt you because it could be the work of an enemy. The search engines will never penalize you for something that could be sabotage by others.

My own experience is further evidence that the duplicate content penalty is a myth. I've been publishing articles for years and I always publish them on multiple article directories. The result: my SERPs keep improving month after month.

    A couple more tips:

    1. Always publish the content on your own site first and get it indexed before publishing elsewhere. Original content credit is too valuable to give away. EZA allows you to publish the same article on your own site. It's not duplicate content.

    2. Even though there's no duplicate content risk I don't advise publishing to a huge volume of sites. I think at some point it will dilute the impact of your links and content. Besides, EZA and some other directories don't like it. I only publish to a handful of quality directories.

OK, lets stop using the words 'penalize' and 'penalty'. Everyone's agreed that there isn't one, except for serious cases where google might manually deindex a site. Same applies for links. If someone at the 'Plex takes a look at your setup and decides YOU did it, specifically to manipulate serps, they'd pull the rug out from under you faster than you can say 'Jerk'. Google have no legal obligation to show your site in their listings - they are a law unto themselves, and if you care to do a little searching on Google itself you'll find countless examples of people who think their sites have been deindexed unfairly or 'for no reason'. Shoot first, ask questions later has been the Google way since day 1.

An example of how this might occur? A QA operative at Google is pointed towards your site by a competitor accusing you of spamming. The usual checks found that all your 250,000 backlinks came from 3 domains all registered to the same person as the destination site and all hosted on the same IP. Bye Bye.

As for duplicate content 'harming' you, we are all pretty much agreed (except for the loony 'wish keyword stuffing still worked on my doorway pages sites' crowd) that it harms by what it DOESN'T do - i.e. by not providing much value in the user experience, so it won't do much for your rankings, because search engines want to provide a good user experience.

Any 'valuable' keyword I care to choose, credit cards, acne, dog training, hotels, loan consolidation fat loss, you name it, NONE of these terms are 'dominated' by pure duplicate content sites. Care to make a guess why that is?

Edit - there are a couple of notable exceptions, but even these 1. have MASSES of original content too, and 2. have TENS OF THOUSANDS of backlinks.

Now. Can we PLEASE put the duplicate content penguin put to bed?

BTW, despite what google SAY, we don't work there, so we have no hard proof that what they say is true. They may have some kind of automated penalty system for all we know. I haven't ever seen it though.

Once you "spin" the article, it's general idea may be the same but it's considered a unique page by the search engines (if spun sufficiently).

Let's say that you have a page about the subject of this thread.

          "Duplicate Content Debate"

You are targeting that keyword phrase on that page but there might also be traffic to be had targeting the phrase:

          "Identical Article Discussion"

That's a terrible example off the top of my head but I think it shows the idea. With a few minutes spent spinning the article, you can target both phrases at the same site (or at different ones) instead of writing an entirely new article.

Originally Posted by theimdude View Post

I don't use the same article on multiple pages on the same site. They're
spun to offer uniqueness for each page, and carefully selected keywords
are then injected into the articles. This sounds like a very mechanical
process, but I can assure you that all the articles read well, and provide
the readers with the information they need to make a purchase decision
          (or not).

With this method, I can target keywords that nobody else bothers with
due to their low traffic volumes. But when you have a couple of dozen
keywords with literally no competition at all, and search engine traffic
all adding up to several thousand... well, you extrapolate from here.

Oh yes.. almost forgot. Due to the techniques I've tested over the years,
I get a very high CTR. Even on Squidoo, I get between 15% and 29%, and
baring in mind all the other distractions on Lenses we have to suffer, I
          reckon that's pretty good.

So much of this is semantics. Penalty no. Duplicate content ignored in search results - yes (so I suppose someone could see that as a "penalty"). Now throw duplicated content in with linking schemes and other kinds of spam and you set off the alarms at Google.
