My Namecheap Sites Are Gone -- DNS Change

Namecheap sites may be down.
After an hour with chat I got:
Vartui Sargsyan (Domain CS) namecheap chat
Unfortunately we are experiencing issues with DNS resolution for a small selection of our domain names.

She could not have told me that an hour ago?

I find it hard to believe they didn't notify customers in advance.

  • My name cheap sites are all still working.

I'm a fan of theirs but 100% agree they should send out notice to effected customers. I'm sending paid traffic to these sites so them being down would be a double wamy.

Off topic a little but is anyone moving to Google Domains? I started moving a few domains there from Godaddy. I'm attempting to 100% get off Godaddy and split between Google Domains and NameCheap.

I checked my email from them and NO notices. I found the problem when I went to one of my ebay auctions and a picture I posted in the auction text area was missing.

My last email from Namecheap was on 7-8-2016, July News. I do not have SPAM or Junk filters that have any message in them.

It is 5:20 p.m. Califorinia time and my sites are still down. The worst part is namecheap is serving up other sites and some have links to click for the 18 viruses found on the site.

With a google search I get two DIFFERENT status updates. https://status.namecheap.com/archives/26790 IT IS ALL BETTER and https://status.namecheap.com/archives/26896 IT IS NOT ALL BETTER at a later time than ALL BETTER.

FRUSTRATING! To say the least. I have about 20 sites hosted with them and was going to move more, HOWEVER --- ?????

Here is one of my DEAD sites robertjosephhale.com It takes to to other sites.

    Hi bobsstuff,

    Have you updated your nameservers?

Their status notification service clearly indicated that if you are using the old nameserver names that you need to update to the current nameservers.

I have been using their hosting services for a couple of years now, I have about a dozen websites hosted their, and have never had a single issue.

Seems to me that they have decided to phase out their older nameservers and need the small number of users that are still using those old nameservers to update their DNS to point at the new nameservers.

Clearly they posted advanced notification about the upcoming change and reported on the status of issues, along with how you can take action to resolve the issue. They obviously did not anticipate the DNS issues and would not have been able to give advance warning for that.

Could they have communicated better about the upcoming issue? Yes, it seems so, but on a whole, they have been an exemplary hosting service..

I was on chat for an hour this morning and the CS rep gave me the same name servers I am currently using. Without her help, I changed one site to the new name servers they listed on the notice but with no results there either. I have left them changed and will see what happens when it all clears. I have one site with new nameservers and left the rest the same since the CS gave me the same ones I've been using.

My sites are still gone at 7:20 PDT

NEXT DAY: A couple of my Namecheap registered sites with Namecheap hosting are up, but most are not.

YES, I changed the nameserver on one of my outside of Namecheap registered sites, and it still has a problem. I am no going to change every one. Besides, the CS at Namecheap said to use the exact one I have been using.

Yesterday I submitted a ticket to namecheap. Today the ticket is not in my TICKET "folder". No ticket, no response.

Of those who have no problem with their sites, did you change your name servers to a new address? Have you had to go through and change anything recently?

OF COURSE, you are not out of the woods yet. Here is a Namecheap status from their site (NOT an email):

We are planning to transfer all accounts hosted on Premium server 3to our brand new state-of-the-art server - Premium server 35. The new server will provide the power and reliability we strive to deliver for years to come.
The transfer is going to be performed on Sunday, July 31, at 01:00 AM EDT | 05:00 UTC. We aim to keep downtime to a minimum and will be performing the transfer outside of business hours to minimize disruption.

I am equally having the same problem here and namecheap has not been able to resolve it.

Thanks, I am not crazy. At least someone else sees the problem.

I am looking at my domains registered at 1and1.com and hosted at namecheap.
Many do not work. However, one does. I looked at the name servers and anything else that might be different. I cannot see any difference. They are the same old name servers I have had for a long time. One loads normally to my site and the other loads to someone else's site. FRUSTRATING!

NOW, all of my registered and hosted at Namecheap sites are working properly. It is only Godaddy and 1and1 sites that will not load to my pages.

      Hi bobsstuff,

All that a nameserver does is point a domain name to an IP address. If you are using Godaddy & 1and1 nameservers to point your domain to your web server IP address then perhaps you need to update those DNS entries to point to the correct IP address?

Have you checked the Nameserver settings at your Godaddy and 1and1 accounts? Perhaps they are using the obsolete nameserver addresses? Or, perhaps you are using the Godaddy/1and1 nameservers, instead of the namecheap name servers, and you just need to point them at the correct IP address?

Those are some specific things to check that may help you resolve your issues.

There are many different ways of configuring your DNS settings, some of your websites are obviously configured differently than all the other websites that are working fine. You need to start by checking the Registrar settings to see where your registrar points to as the authoritative nameservers. Then you need to check those authoritative nameserver records for proper configuration.

Obviously if you are not using Namecheap as your domain registrar they cannot help you with your GoDaddy/1&1 domain settings other than to tell you to update the nameservers to Namecheap name servers, or to provide the proper IP address to point to in those 3rd party DNS settings if you insist on using those external nameservers.

Also, be aware that DNS settings do not propagate instantly to your personal computer. DNS pointers are cached and will update after an hour or so, and in some cases can take up to a couple of days, that is because your browser caches the DNS pointer IP and then updates it after a while by checking retrieving from your local router, which also caches it after retrieving the IP address from the ISP's DNS router, which also caches the last IP address until their cached version expires, and so on across the Internet until it finally reaches your authoritative nameservers that will return your current settings, but only after all those cashed versions expire and work their way back to the authoritative name servers.

I recommend that you use an online tool to monitor the propagation process and to verify that your local computer is pointing at the proper IP address using the ping command on your PC.

This tool will allow you to monitor your DNS propagation process:
      https://www.whatsmydns.net/

This tool will allow to to verify your current authoritative namesevers:

Do you have an ace in the hole? A backup plan with a different host just in case this turns out to be a long-term pain in the butt? Could there be a problem with paying bill or website content?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10785214].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author bobsstuff
    Randall,
Backup plan in my head. Get another host and redirect the name servers there. NO, no billing prolbems, everything current. Quality content, no problem there.

On the bright side, I just got back from the movies and one more site is back. A godaddy registered, Namecheap hosted one. I did go into godaddy and paste the name servers in and save. Identical name servers, just did a "reset". So now I will go into more sites and just rest the old names with the same old names and see what happens.

ON EDIT: Just after the post above, I went to godaddy again and "reset" the name servers. Deleted and replace with the identical names. Came back and hour or so later and another site is now working normally.

SOLUTION: (maybe): Jut reset the DNS -- name servers by copying the old name and pasting it right back into the place you just removed it from. Do that with both name servers. Hit SAVE and wait for it to propagate. On the Namecheap site the gave NEW names for the name servers. Namecheap CS chat and email to me to use the OLD ones I have used for a long time, no change to any new names.

    dburk,
Thank you for all of your help and links. I went through all of my non-working domains and reset the name servers, per namecheap's recommendation (chat & email). I checked. I used both of your tools for looking at some of the sites I reset. They show green checks -- propagated. The other link shows the correct name server that Namecheap gave me.

Next I'll wait until tomorrow and check them again. Some I reset, just deleting and pasting the same name are back online. Nothing appeared wrong when I deleted a name and just copied the same name back. However they worked.

Yes, I had read that DNS changes can take up to 48 hours, so I'll wait patiently or IMPATIENTLY.

ALL BETTER! Cutting and pasting the same name server name back solved the problem. Today all of my sites are back, loading normally.

Namecheap is changing servers. Their onsite notice says to completely change your name servers to new ones. My sites would not load so I contacted Namecheap via chat and when the problem continued I contacted them through a TICKET - email. Chat and email said to use the SAME nameservers I have been using. Mine were all correct, but deleting them and reinstalling them solved the problem.

Thank for all the help and support you gave me.
