I see a lot of individuals on this forum, really struggling
to make a living from Internet marketing on this forum. Globally, there must be tens of thousands of people having a go at it... a good proportion of these individuals getting nowhere particularly fast. Of course there are success stories, there's no disputing that. But... Compare online marketing with your more traditional offline business and the returns that you can get, and it makes me wonder, what is the real attraction of Internet marketing for you? Why do you do it? What makes Internet marketing such an attractive proposition? Have you considered any alternatives if you are really struggling online? If you are struggling to make ends meet, getting excited by the odd few dollars made here and there - don't you think you could make your time a lot more worthwhile, by sticking to the creation of an offline business instead? I'm sure many of you are young, fit and able, with all the energy in the world at your fingertips, that you can easily tap into, yet... You spend hours everyday struggling to just make a few dollars here and there, why? What is the attraction? Why do you keep going? What is your motivation? Is it belief in yourself that you can hit it big time one day, if you just keep plugging away at it? Is it that you're just so bloody-minded and determined that you simply cannot give up now, after pouring so much energy and time into this method of making money? Is it purely because you enjoy the whole process? Is it because you are addicted to the perfect ideal, the utopian dream of hitting the ground running one day? Is it the social interaction aspect that appeals to you? Have you ever thought about setting up a much more simple, cash rewarding business offline? What offline business ideas could you come up with, that are easy to implement and cost very little to set up, that could pay you a great deal more money? Please feel welcome to share your ideas, your aspirations or to answer as best you can, any of the above questions. Particularly though, I'm interested to know what is the main attraction of Internet marketing for you? Many thanks. Mark Andrews |

Hi Mark,
Here is why I am attracted to internet marketing. I am a single mother with a 2 year old daughter. I do not receive child support and I work my butt off trying to make ends meet. IM is a way that I can also work, while I am at home with my daughter, to try and make more money. I live in Boston, MA. The cost of living here is relatively high. I think I could live comfortably in another state with what I am scraping by on now. If I start to make an acceptable amount of money online, I would love to move to another state. This business is portable and that is an extremely attractive idea. I know that it is possible to make money online and I know that once I figure out the method that I am going to use, I can outsource 90% of that freeing up most of my time to be with my daughter. Also, IM is a challenge and I LOVE a challenge!! |

My Goal: Full-Time IM by May 2010
How? I will create 1 health related product per month between now and May 2010. Wish me luck!! |

I'm a single Dad and I have to have time for my kids and be flexible. It's the most flexible industry.
It''s that simple really. I don't wake up at 11 am and stay up all hours. I work normal hours, except when the kids are in bed I usually work a few more. |

If you are not in complete control of your income streams, they can get turned off by someone else - and nobody else out there gives a rat's arse about you, your family, your business, or your income. So you can't trust them to do the Right Thing by you. Ever.

Freedom, freedom, and more freedom. Plus it is the only place you can lose everything, and build it back up so you know it is safe.

For a long time i thought my one mativation was to get rich. Nowasays I understand those people who said "if money is your only motivation, you will not get anywhere fast".
My motivation now is different. It's the fact that I can do this form anywhere that has an internet connection. To me, right now, the idea of making 2000$ a month no matter where I am appeals more than the chance of hitting a million dollar pay day. I want the ability to travel ad see the world, visit the friends I have in many countries and enjoy a month in a hotel in Marrakech if I so wish, knowing I can earn my living form any of those locations. I guess you could say the same of being a published writer, an architect and a few other professional activities, but i have had no formal education past primary school and getting to uni now would be a bit of a stretch (still doable though). IM allows me to circumvent all of that and still aim for my desired standard, with the chance to improve it over time. |

When I first began trying to earn some cash with my computer, I was a single mom with three small children and needed the extra cash. I continued even when it wasn't so needed because I enjoy it and it paid for extras.
My mindset changed about 3 years ago to where I knew that I eventually wanted to do this full time. I have now been free from a "job" for almost a a year and a half. I love what I do (most of it) and love the processes. I love the freedom that I have in many ways. Sure, I have to meet deadlines but I can work whatever time I want, I don't have to work on weekends unless I choose to and I can pick who I want to work with. As my business has been building and expanding into different directions, I've been gaining even more freedom and it's a wonderful thing. Tina |

I like the freedom, but that comes with a price. It is very hard for me to
stay disciplined like I would punching a clock. Working from home is lovely... and an evil that draws my attention easily to other things. I have a million online friends (a lot from Warrior) but meet very few new friends locally. Unlike a job where it is easy to meet friends. I would not call it a love/hate relationship as I do not hate anything about IM (I lied, I HATE TECHY STUFF!) I loved creating an ebook and having it sell well at a high price. I love people seeing my blog or posts and contacting me to work on their project. I love the endless opportunity and the boundless nature of IM Paul |

a sense of financial security. i intend to work once i'm done with school and all. but i don't want to rely on that job for money. my purpose of working would be to socialise, interact with people. don't really want to be couped up at home all day. but yah, online marketing will ensure that i'm not financially reliant on the job.
plus online, not everyone is going to know my real age etc. so basically it allows me to be taken seriously. how many people would believe an 18 year old can write copy that converts well? not many eh? i'm not exactly obliged to tell clients that i'm a teenager doing my A levels (which is the exam we do in the 12 grade, for all you american folks who might be unaware). and this in turn ensures i don't potentially lose out on acquiring clients. |

The real attraction of internet marketing for me is the flexibility that it offers. I'm not as consumed by making dump truck loads of money as some are since material things don't really matter to me.
What matters more to me is having the time flexibility to be able to experience more opportunities in life. For example, being able to go on mission trips around the world, being able to provide food for those in poverty, and here at home, being able to be with my family more often. Working online affords the possibility to work from nearly anywhere. |

The main attraction for me is that I can impliment my own ideas, run with them, and profit by them. The other thing is that I don't have to answer to someone above me. I can take off when I want to or work more, gaining more profit if I want to.
It's simple for me lol ... Mary |

I don't ever, ever, ever want my income tied to a piece of geography EVER again.
Did I mention EVER? I want my children to build a stream of residual, recurring income that they can keep cashing ANYWHERE in the world. I make over $100/hr in my offline business. As a result, I have not: * Played golf in 15 years (4 hours x $110/hr + greens fees is expensive golf) * Gone on a decent vacation for the first 10 of those 15 years (changing that now) * Enjoyed any vacation knowing that a client could have a problem requiring me to fly back home at any time. Need I say more? Oh, ya, - I want to work at home, no commute, in shorts & T-shirt and be able to stop to play with the kids, the cat, the wife whenever the opportunity arises. PCRoger. |

Quite frankly I hate being owned and that's how I feel everyday when I head into the office. Busting my butt to allow someone else the opportunity to live the life of luxury.
IM is allowing me the opportunity to come closer to breaking those corporate chains that I feel are strangling me day in and day out. To sum it up, IM allows me to work for me and no one else. |

IM is relatively more affordable to get into then say an offline business ... where most people fail online is in realizing that IM takes a lot of hard work , maybe even more so than in the offline world ... you can't just create a website and expect traffic to flood in.
But the Freedom and sense of ownership IM gives you is priceless. |

TOTAL FREEDOM!
I've run other businesses and they will invariably trap you into working set hours, being in a set location, or having to meet people at set times. Not so IM. I just returned from a 4 week holiday in the UK and Switzerland. While in the UK, I barely checked in online (just a quick perusal of e-mail). For two weeks in Switzerland, I was totally unplugged (left my Mail Slave to let people know I'd be answering their e-mail when I got down out of the mountains). BTW, you can see that trip at Kevin Riley Inc I run my business from my home office in Osaka, Japan. I would be hard pressed to run any other kind of business in Japan - other than a blasted English school. I get up when I want ... I work when I want ... I go out for sauntering walks when I want. The money is nice, but the freedom is fantastic! |

I hate working for other people.
Let me repeat that......I HATE working for other people! I want total freedom.....and you just don't get that with a "normal" job. I really hate the idea of somebody telling me where to be, when to be there, when to take a break, when to eat lunch, when to go home, when I can take a vacation, IF I can take a vacation, what I'm allowed to do, how much money I'm allowed to have, etc. etc., the list goes on and on. I know most people are ok with that, but not me. Pardon my french, but **** that! I am NOT going to let somebody else have that much control over me and my life, simple as that. Sure I have hopes of making big money too......but for me it's mostly about the freedom. |

Many thanks everyone for your comments... I truly
appreciate you all taking a few minutes out of your busy schedules to reply on this thread. Kevin... (quoted your comment below) I just looked at your blog, what more can I say but, 'WOW!' Looks like a truly wonderful vacation that will give you and your wife, many happy memories for years to come. Quite a dab hand at photography too! I've left a comment on your blog for you btw. May everyone that contributed to this thread have a truly gorgeous day and, as I said to Kevin, as much good health and happiness as you can handle. To your continued success! Best regards.
