What are your favorite Gamification techniques to get people to contribute

If you're crowdsourcing a puzzle to a large number of people, what GAMIFICATION techniques do you think would get people excited enough to:

hit the puzzle hard
hit the puzzle quickly
correct each other

I'm thinking levels, points, achievements, anything else from the gaming world?

  • All of the amount you have mentioned..

Points, leaderboards, competition, progress bars, levels, etc.

There is a great book about gamification called 'Gamestorming' - it's very basic but you should check it out to help you with this.

Do you think gamification is a good way to go to increase the chances of users sharing social content?

Gamification is one of the best ways. Not many people will do something unless there is something in it for them. People like seeing their name on the top of a leaderboard and like it better when other people see it.

You might also want to consider offering a real prize like an Amazon Gift card. That is what I am currently debating on one of my websites.

Would offering cash AND gift cards and points be better?

I would think if the points, levels and badges are all free for you I would include them in the rewards along with cash or a gift card.

I'm still over thinking how to get the initial traffic surge to get my "sharing contest" off to a quick start.

That's the problem... getting that initial 'critical mass' going

In BJJ it takes years to get to the next belt

along the way however, we get stripes (finger tape) at the ends of our belts when our instructor believes we've improved somewhat..

why not implement that, smaller promotions within a bigger promotion they're working towards.

    best of luck,
