Domain - What to do Next?

Not sure if I have hooked something good or bad.

I have managed to find a domain by accident which belongs to someone who has a good decent following, and has done a number of interviews including few links from very authoritative magazines.

The company is still going, but for some reason they have let the domain name expire only few weeks ago.

I have registered the name not knowing this, and now not sure what to do with it.

What would you do in my shoes?

Did you check to see if there is a trademark or tradename already registered by the company? If so, you could be infringing on someone's registered name.

Do nothing for now, perhaps contact the original owner, see if they still want it or not.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your replies.

I can't really share the domain name.

I am not sure if it has a trade mark, but I know a company is registered using the same name and all the reference made in media refer to the company name with some linking to the domain.

I bought the name which was free to register, and I had no idea what was behind it. Why would I?

Park the domain for a few months and monitor the direct traffic volume.

If the company that owns it needs it you could get a pretty amount of money. Search this "PLDT domain" its a company here in the Philippines. I think the domain owner who parked it got a huge amount. I got mine MyDiskarte | Free Online Shop Philippines last year.

Just take a minute and do a trademark search.
You could face a UDRP if it's a registered mark.

I would definitely contact the prior owner before doing anything with the domain. They may be willing to pay you a nice "reward" for rescuing their domain and offering it back to them. Unless the domain name is trademarked, they SHOULD pay you something for the domain, since you spent money to buy it. If it's a good domain with a lot of traffic, they should be willing to pay you proportionately. They're the ones who perhaps forgot to renew it, after all.

Of course, maybe they let it go on purpose to re-brand, but it doesn't sound likely.

If they don't get back to you, don't do anything until you check for trademarks. You don't want to get in any legal trouble with the former owners over trademark utilization. If there are no trademarks, you have a wide variety of options. Some of them include parking the domain, selling advertising on it, building your own site on it and enjoying the traffic benefits, or selling the domain for a profit on another website, like Flippa or this site (I believe there's a section for it).

Some very interesting replies opening a mind a little wider then what I already knew.

I think I will wait for a week or so before getting doing anything as I have other more important jobs to deal with.

If the owner does not come looking for me, then I will get a new site step with similar content and enjoy the traffic and maybe few back links to my main sites.

I am really enjoying this SEO game at the moment. It can be a lot of fun!
