Numbers - The Entire Story

Numbers and stats can be misleading in the way they are used and not tell the reality of the situation.

For example, I've seen stats that on Twitter tweets that include images and videos get something like 168% more interaction than tweets that are only text. Don't quote me on the "168%". It's probably not totally accurate, but it's in the ball park.

After reading this, one could be tempted to start adding images to all their tweets to get more interaction.

The flaw in this strategy is that it doesn't factor in the time it takes to find or create an image or video to use and then upload it.

If it takes 10X as much time to create a tweet with an image/video as it does to create a text tweet, then the entire story and the reality of the situation is more like 168:1000...meaning you're far better off making 10 text tweets with the same time and effort than a single tweet that contains an image or video.

There's other examples, but I'm getting old and forgot what they were when I was writing this....

    Hi I don't agree.

In advertising and marketing, its all a numbers game. Your campaign manager must know how to do wizardry by reading numbers only.

I was listening to one of Amy potterfields podcast and she really put all credit (of her successful ad campaigns) onto the shoulders of numbers. She went on explaining how her facebook ad manager read the numbers so well and devised strategies that a man alien to numbers won't even think of.

Numbers decide your next move. Number decide what you need to tweak. Numbers decide whether you win or lose.
    Cheers! Thanks

Did you actually read my post? The number that tweets get 168% more interaction is incomplete. The additional time, effort and financial costs must also be factored in.

Numbers only help if you understand and can interpret them correctly, then create a strategy that exploits the numbers to the maximum.

A lot of big sites fudge their numbers.
    • Kickstarter was (maybe they still do) deleting all the failed campaigns so the site looked like it was extremely successful.
    • Udemy allows sellers to give their course away for free which jacks up the student numbers and at the same time sell the same course. That makes a lot of courses look like they've sold 10s of thousands of dollars when odds are most aren't very profitable.
