NFL Fans - I need your advice

I'm putting together a site that creates newsletters for each NFL team. However, some teams don't have enough news to send a daily email.

Easy enough, I'll just have those sites send updates weekly...Which brings up my problem...What day would you like to recieve news about your favorite team.

Factor in, this is automated and while most games are on Sun, there's Mon Night Football, etc.

In general, would you rather get updates right before the game, right after, or in the middle of the week?

I'm leaning towards the middle of the NFL week, T-W-Th, but see good reasons for right before/after too.

Please help...

When I had an office job, I think we used to submit our weekly office pool picks in on Thursday. Fantasy football is another huge niche you should consider. I'm not sure what their deadlines are each week.

When I was into that stuff, I would always get the latest news from RotoWorld.com. They check all the local papers and have every little detail on every player and every team.

Kurt, I'd want my stuff the day before the game, preferably Saturday for
Sunday games and Sunday afternoon for the Monday game of the week.

I think the newsletter should go out in the middle of the week.

Usually by wed or thur I am ready for some football ( even though there are college games almost every night now) If I received a newsletter or anything during the middle of the week it is a bonus.

Heck, I find my self on the internet looking upstuff mid week anyway.

In many of the big cities that have NFL teams the city stops when that team is playing and everyone from grannies to toddlers know whats going on.

Here where I live you don't find many cars on the street when we plan..

One last thing....GO TITANS!!! Titan up...

I know what you mean. I lived in Nebraska for 17 years, and when the Huskers played, the state stopped. If you were unlucky enough to have to go shopping or something, the radio broadcast would be playing over the store's PA system, with announcements held until a time out or commercial.

I used to work with a guy who listed not missing a Husker game (TV, radio or in person) in 42 years as one of the things he was proud of in his life.

          Interview with QB
Interview with a different player every week
          Gossip
          Pregame analysis
          Postgame analysis

            Hi Dee,

It's an automated system at first. I'm developing the site to spin. Right now, I'm just using Digg because their descriptions are in the public domain, according to their TOS.

I do have an NFL list that does out daily., which I should have probably mentioned.

The logisitics of "writing" 33 newsletters a day is over-whelming. Once different email lists get a decent number of subscribers, those can be exapnded.

But you did give me an idea or two. I may be better off creating a newsletter for each division.

          Hi Kurt..
I would have your service set up for Thursday cuz you still get the people at work and wont have to depend on people checking there emails on the weekend from home ...
then if feasible offer an upsell service of a news blast type mailing that fires off late week news like injuries or suspensions for the gamblers and fantasy league players .. for a small fee of course .. I know when I was betting football I would have paid for that type of service no questions asked.

The reason for me that thursday would be best is that the early week news papers and online sites will have enuff football coverage where I wouldn't need a newsletter early in the week .. but something later towards game day is a no brainer

          Peace

I would think if you want it to go viral that Thursday afternoon/evening would allow your readers to scope it out and make it a watercooler event on Friday.

Most of the world is a 9-5 environment so I would want to concentrate my efforts towards that crowd.

And if you don't have a daily trickle of some sort you won't give your readers a chance to look forward to something everyday.

          John,

Having lived in Iowa City back in the 70's and 80's, when the Hawkeyes played at home the town was eerily quiet. The stadium held 70,000 and at that time Iowa City was around 58,000 people if I remember. It was an experience...

          Kurt,

Another consideration is Fantasy Football leagues. While i don't get involved, these individuals may want the info as early as possible during the week...just a thought.

As a casual fan, I'd want a couple of updates per week.

One a day or so after the game, with links to stories, video highlights, etc.

One a day or so before the next game, with links to stories, predictions, etc.

      HTH

PS - When my Vikings signed #4, their odds of winning the Super Bowl were cut in half, even before he took a single snap in practice. Skoal, Vikings!

I would want the weekly emails to come at the end of the week, on Friday or Saturday. That way you can read all the news of the previous weeks developments since that last game. The info will be up to date regarding the team right before sunday's games, especially stuff like injuries, player changes, coaching announcements, etc.

Regarding Ron's question - fantasy football deadlines are always on gameday, usually one or two hours before kickoff so that people can adjust their lineup based on the very latest injury updates.

I would have to agree with Steven. Getting the news a day before the game begins would be my preferred choice plus it would help out in relation to fantasy football related decisions.

I'm thinking Thursday-Friday. (The best time to get the fans hyped up.)

    Reasons:

    1. Monday - I'm ready for MNF and don't feel like reading it.
    2. Tuesday - Discussing the MNF game will all my friends/family. Hype is wearing off
    3. Wednesday - Still discussing all the games, the big plays, etc. (Like real fans do) Now all the hype is gone, I'm ready for next week.
    4. Thurs.-Fri. - Hit me with these newsletters! I can't wait to watch the games, I'm ready to read about my favorite teams and see what's going on around the league!
    5. Saturday - I'm out with my friends, no time to sit and read a newsletter, already hyped up because the game is tomorrow.
    6. Sunday - Watchin Football all day.. Already hyped, don't feel like reading

On a very typical week, my best guess would be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Reason being is because there are games that fall on a Thursday as well (like next Thursday will be the NFL season opener).

Saturday wouldn't be good because that is college football day and the whole nation would be stuck on it. And of course, Sunday and Monday would be off.

Now you COULD have to adjust because sometimes a rabbit would be pulled out of the hat and a game would be played on an unusual day (like the Week 17 Patriots-Giants game in 2007 - the one where the Patriots sealed their perfect record - was played on a Saturday).

So stay on the lookout, but typically, you shouldn't go wrong with Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, where no NFL football is being played.

I'm fairly sure there will be enough news for every team every day. The local newspapers (print and online versions) typically find something to say each day. There are Yahoo news reports each day. Each team has a website. Forums with rumors, etc.

Or, just bag your idea as being too broad and too hands-off with automation and focus on the only team that matters: the Broncos.

Just today I've read Bronco stories about the latest cuts, miffed players, projected wins, why the Raiders still suck worse, whether Bowlen is nuking the team to move it to Los Angeles, etc.

No news? Just check out the Denver Post and its Broncos discussion forum. And that's just one site full of daily stuff.

Or, you could follow my fantasy team. Due to a loophole I found in my league rules, I went with no running backs. Should be a fun year.

        Hey Brian,

The Broncos are my true passion...I visit the Post, Orangemane, Bronco
Country every day. Used to visit the RMN too (RIP). At this very minute I am listening to the pregrame show with Dave Logan on koaradio.com.

I won't say my screen name at Bronco Country forum becasuse I've been too immature in the past...Am working on it. LOL

Again, it's not a lack of news, but rather a lack of stuff I can automate with concerns for copyright laws. I'm using Digg.com for now because their TOS states that all descriptions entered by users become public domain.

Why not have a default day (I think Thurs would be best), but give the user an option somewhere (if possible) to select the days they want the news -- up to every day? And when sending it out, for the guys that didn't want it every day, you could 'store' the news for them so when they did want it - ie default Thurs - it would list the big news (ordered by # of diggs?), then Thursday news, then a recap for the days before that, but for the people that decided they wanted it every day, just giving them the news for each day with a recap on Sat so they didn't have to trudge through all this info they already got... every day.

This could accomodate everyone, just might be a wee bit harder to code (not too much harder though). I'm just not sure your method of delivering the news letters would be able to support this, if it isn't a custom thing.

My $0.02, hope it works out for you and makes you exponentially more than 2 cents :p

You will have a tough time doing a weekly newsletter outside of the season. I am a Steelers fan and they are boring in the off season because the build from within the draft. But hey, it works so boring is good.

    Thursday sounds good to me.

And I beg to differ. It is all about the Black and Gold. And we got 6 to prove it.
