If you had to start all over again where would you begin?

As the title says, for all of you that have found success in online marketing - if you had to start all over again where would you begin?

I have been learning a lot recently and I am still at the stage where I need to learn a lot more. I would like some guidance on where to begin my journey.

Online marketing is very appealing as I hate my corporate 9-5 job. I also like the idea of living in the middle of nowhere while earning a living online.

Any guidance would be great.

I'd start building email lists.. across a range of niches..

A simple webpage, asking for email addresses in exchange for a freebie.

Then I'd continue to send them valuable content that will benefit them..
and make the occasional recommendation on paid products..
take 50% - 75% commission of each sale..

And I'd forget about building a website with loads of freely available content, SEO, all that stuff, for a while at least..

Instead of that, I'd just send PPC traffic to the simple webpage.

Tweak things and eventually choose the most profitable niches
then create my own products and membership programs.

    Rinse and repeat.

I've seen this question typed doxens of times. Id start by finding somebody very, very successful with what I want to do and I would just ask them for help and model off of them.

Treating this like the biggest thing ever that can change your life.

I hope your hatred for your corporate 9 - 5 job is not just because of the duration of the work time. To make it in the online business you may have to put more than that initially.
Making it in online business requires starting from the right foundation and then build up.
Right keyword, right content. right website design, right email list building, right traffic will bring you close to the promised land.

If I had to start again, I would chose one niche/topic/strategy and stick with it.

I'd learn as much as I could, (which is what I am trying to do now), through free content, blogs, tips and tricks etc. I'd stick with it until I saw reasonable success, then consider branching out.

Michael has a really great idea also.

    All the best.

If I had to start over, I would make sure I jumped in sooner (i took too long reading and didn't take action at first)

    hey there

I like your passion and drive to make money online it is fun!!

As a newbie I recommend you do this:

    • Learn as much as you can for free hint hint on here...
    • Be consistent and never give up
    • Find what works and then scale it when you can
    • Focus on one thing at once, you will become overwhelmed overwise
    • Do these properly and realise you will have to invest in your business at some point!
    Have fun

Don't believe everything you read here, and be cautious about who you listen to or do business with.

Double check advice before you implement it. Perhaps with the best intentions, some people really do not have a clue what they're talking about, so do your own research before doing anything that could impact your business.

Remember, what works for one person might not necessarily work for you.

Yes, this is vital advice for the area of internet-marketing. Don't believe ANYTHING until you've done it for yourself.

I'll make two of the significant points on this (there are others) . . .

          1) not everything you read is true. For example, years ago I bought an internet-marketing course and followed the method (I was even used by the author, as the example of how to do the method "perfectly", in the private forum for that guide).

After several months, not one of the 88 members of the private forum for that method, had said they'd made a single penny from it (I hadn't either . . . I eventually did make one sale after 2 years, so a loss overall). Then, re-reading the method and trying to learn everything I could from it, I found that the lists of sites that the author "uses every day to make big bucks" had sites which had been down for several years (this was a brand new course), and others which didn't do anything like what the author claimed that he used from for.

Then my suspicions were confirmed when, after being asked by several us on that forum, the author gave us his best advice for getting more traffic, which he said he'd done personally, and which got him tons of traffic . . . he even gave us the exact Fiverr worker he said he'd used . . . and a lot of us on that forum did precisely what he'd recommended, and all got the same result . . . a 75% DECREASE in traffic, and no recovery weeks or even months later.

I realized that the "method" he'd promoted and sold was not a real method at all, it was just an over-hyped bunch of things he'd found on outdated sites somewhere. It simply didn't work at all, as described.

There certainly are methods that work, being sold, and given away for free, in the area of internet-marketing, but not everything is genuine.

          2) Even with methods that do work, even the experts don't know what exactly will work for each new offer.

For example, email marketing or paid-traffic. Newbies often try one or two very small tests (often too small to give any real indication one way or the other), make a loss, assume the whole method "doesn't work" and quit.

In reality, the experts might do the same tests (although probably with a more realistic volume) and get the SAME results . . . they then do a lot of other tests, find ways to improve the best-performing, re-test, improve some more, all before finally finding a profitable funnel. Then up-scale rapidly.

So, that's 2 of the points about learning in internet-marketing. There are many other things to learn, of course, and this is a great place to do so.

If I was starting again, I'd understand the two things above, not get frustrated when things don't actually work as stated, and understand more about the reality of learning and success with internet--marketing.

Drive traffic to join a mailing list. Wake up every morning and write an email to them and pitch them to buy a paid product in every email. I think my current situation requires me to interact and depend on too many people. I rather just be me and my customer.

This is horrible advice. Not trying to offend, but sending a daily sales pitch will kill your list's trust and responsiveness. Instead, send them valuable info, and don't be afraid to promote products from time to time. Trust is built on you giving value, not daily sales pitches.

      Peace.

You can certainly deliver value and "pitch" at the same time. Just don't do a hard pitch. Look at Ben Settle and how he delivers value, entertainment and a natural pitch in every email every day. Who cares if the riff raff non-buyers drop off.

Fair enough. Sorry if I came off snarky. Of course, suggesting great products is key. Everyone hears a word with different intensity, and "pitch" always sounds like a hard sell to me. I see where you're coming from, though.

Well if I had to start all over again, I would go for setting up my own e-commerce website by the age of 18. I jumped into this business pretty late and invested a lot of time to learn its basics. As far as quitting your corporate job goes, I think its a bad idea to throw away this luxury for your new startup. You can quit it if you're buying off an already established online business.Otherwise , its wise to keep your job until something good comes up.

    Cheers - James

first set up my home base, create my site, put in my favorite plugins, set up my funnel, create squeeze pages. etc...

then, I'd need my list.. so I'd drive paid traffic via PPV & Bing, testing different squeeze pages and targets (keywords & domains)..

Weekly: write 1 SEO prepped post and promote it with other bloggers in my niche, and create 2 or 3 videos for my YT channel...

daily: blog and forum comment, at least 5 times a day, also create emails for my list.

    yup thats about it

    Hey John,

I think the biggest thing for me was to just take action. There's just so much information out there and at first, I tried to learn everything, and because of that I just became more and more confused. I didn't want to risk wasting time doing something wrong.

But because of that many people like me lose time and never make any progress. Any coaching program that shows how to make money can truly help anyone that's willing to put the work in. Some think just by buying the product all of a sudden means you're going to be rich. the mentality instead should be you're now going to work even harder, with tunnel vision canceling out everything else going on.

    Hope that helps,
    -Hassan

If I lost everything I had and could restore one thing that could help me make back money again, it would be an email list. An email list is still one of the best ROI's in earning money. Everything that you do on any platform - youtube, facebook, instagram, twitter, fiverr whatever it may be you're building an audience to sell to and these platforms lets you build an audience on their platform not yours. So you can use any method to build your audience but get your audience on an email list (and back it up) so that you can sell to them on a platform you own - email.

I monetize purchased data (email) using PPL (pay per lead...lead generation) offers, because they are free offers that have mass appeal and pay well.

I have actually been doing this for about 18 years (16+ using CPA offers). While there have been some underlying changes over the years, but the core principles / strategies have remained the same. So if I had to start all over today, I would still do the same thing,

I'm real late answering this question,

The easiest way to find PPL offers is through CPA networks.

I promote MANY offers to the same list.

I favor offers that have a make, get or save money angle / benefit to them. These tend to have the greatest mass appeal. So cross promoting them typically works well.

There are many ways to make money online. In the beginning, all of your learning should be laser focused on this:

#1 Find a model you want to follow.
Once you research the various methods and choose the one that fits you best, then you need to focus on the next step:

#2 Find someone who is truly successful and teaches that method; repeat the blueprint
After you find a training program, follow it. Do the steps, don't just consume the information and never follow through. Finish what you start!

#3 Learning is a bottomless pit.
Its not what you need to know, its what you need to do (covered in step #2). Once you implement the model, you'll gain everything you thought you needed to know. In simpler terms, it's about Learn-As-You-Go.

    Best regards on your journey!

    Hi John,

As a guy who's lived in the middle of nowhere earning money online for 5 prior years here's my take:

    * Follow my fun, not profits
    * Form a love affair with learning about my niche
    * Create, help, assist and serve while largely detaching myself from money and business outcomes
    * Build an email list from Day 1 of my online career

I don't do regrets; you're at the perfect place, at the perfect time, always. But these are things I'm doing now that yielded sweet success for me and are things I've done in the past to create fab results and yes, they are things I advise folks do from Day 1 to rock out their IM careers.

Also, focus on creating and connecting with compassion versus attempting to manipulate people. I was nice enough online with others for a while yet felt compelled to try to manipulate folks, trying to land clients, or to snag traffic, or always looking for something in return to build my own blogging success.

It was like I could not create unconditionally; I always had some condition in mind before I interacted with anybody, even if a bigger part of me just wanted to help.

This energy rooted itself in my terror of losing everything. Including money, property, reputation, the whole 9 yards.

I had to clear these Fear of Loss energies - largely - to enter into a more helpful, abundant, relaxed, helpful space, to where I could build authority in my blogging niche.

Clearing the anxieties was no picnic. Lots of anger, rage, grief, crying and the like. Uncomfortable stuff. But letting go these painful energies paved the way for me to blog for the joy of it, to help my readers, to enjoy helping them, and to build bonds with blogging leaders so I could expand my presence and get featured on high profile blogs.

Mindset/energy work really is everything. Do the inner work - no matter how uncomfortable - and you'll let in, and pursue, the proven ideas, the successful people and all that good stuff which leads to the full time income......so you can leave the 9-5 that ain't working for you to live a more freeing, fun life.

Keep learning. You're well on your way if you're open and willing to be a sponge to knowledge. Put that knowledge into action. Implement. Tweak. Learn. Follow your fun. Help like-minded folks. Make friends. Build your dream life.

Many people have always asked me this...

Amadonxl, if you become very broke right now and
you want to start an Internet business, how will
    you go about it?

It is a question those starting out always want to
hear as they believe it will serve as a guide in
    the quest for online success.

    So do you wanna learn?

    Good....lets ride

If I'm to start all over again... I will do it
    this way

    1. I will search for a HOT market filled with people
desperate for a solution to their problem

    2. Create a product or service catering for that
    market

    3. Create a mini website to sell the product

    4. Drive traffic to the site

    5. Build a list in the process.

The bucks will start rolling in...

Let us briefly take a look at each one.

    HOT MARKET

Notice I did not say I will create a product and
    then try to sell.

No. I said I will look for a STARVING MARKET
and then create a product to cater for that market.

So lets assume that the market I've discovered is
    young girls looking sugar daddies.

    Hey..no preaching here lol...

    Its just an example

Anyway, after coming up with the market, I will
    move to the next step...

    CREATE THE PRODUCT OR SERVICE

I can decide to pick up my pen and write a short
report on how to get a sugar daddy.

I can decide to have a service where I can hook
young girls up with the sugar daddies Of course
I DO NOT know of such service. I am trying to
    explain a process.

Pick the lessons I'm passing across

Once that is sorted, I will...

    CREATE THE WEBSITE

I will register a domain name at namecheap.com for
    about $10. I can register InstantSugarDaddy.com

Now I'm laughing so hard myself about this crazy idea.

I will get a hosting package at hostgator.com or ipage.com

I will create a sales page. I can use wordpress,
    frontpage,optipress,nvu or any good software.

    Then...

    I WILL PROMOTE THE WEBSITE

I will do that by buying traffic through various
    sources.

Yes ...that's the routine, nothing more or less I

I would choose the programs that can bring me sustained income every month (not only one-time commissions). Search for the programs that require monthly subscriptions to continue using their services and become their affiliate. That way you can even quit your 9-5 job.
