What metrics do you use to keep track of progress?

I'm considering building a service targeted to marketers and social media managers - the MVP is a quick and easy dashboard that will show you the metrics that are important for you. This would be delivered via a web dashboard, native mobile app, and/or a browser plugin.

For instance: a content marketer might be interested in seeing traffic and CTR for a couple of dozen content sites, while a social media manager might want to see follower counts and growth velocity for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat for each of their twenty clients.

My initial inspiration for this is an app I used many years ago, before I moved from iOS to Android: Ego. I used it daily back then but it doesn't seem to have been updated and there were a lot of metrics I would have liked to have had access to that I didn't. Further, I have a sizable list of feature ideas that would be of use to marketing professionals; I think I can provide a great deal of value with this in ways that I've not seen done before.

My questions to WF:
  • What metrics matter most to you?
  • Do you currently use a dashboard of some type to get an overview of how you're doing at a glance?
  • What platforms, tools, or sites do you use that aren't typically integrated with non-IM tools?

I'm keeping my list of feature ideas private for the time being, but I do plan to offer alpha accounts to WF members for free in the near future if I decide to build it. I'm not so much trying to be secretive as much as just not wanting to influence the responses I get by sharing my preconception of what you might want.

Here are a few metrics I track:

    -Revenue generated
    -Leads per day
    -Cost Per Lead (CPL)
    -Earnings Per Click (EPC)
    -Optin Rate
-Conversion rate (what percent of my leads buy?)
-Follower count on my various social media channels

I have a custom script that monitors how long a potential lead stays on my sales page and where they click etc. Every little bit of feedback I can get from my prospects is extremely valuable.

To be effective, business metrics should be compared to established benchmarks or business objectives. This provides valuable context for the values used in the metric and allows business users to better act on the information they are viewing. For instance, $20M sales in Q4 sounds like an impressive figure; however, if you're Boeing Aircraft, this figure would have you contemplating filing for bankruptcy.

Context allows business metrics to make an impact. In fact, this is where the line between key performance indicators and performance metrics becomes blurry. The difference between the two ultimately comes down this:

Business metrics are used to track all areas of business

Honestly, I don't keep track of very many metrics but I do what works for me. When sending out my email ads I always use a bitly tracking link which is decent at delivering some basic location feedback. However one thing I really like to do is build as much of a relationship as possible with someone who actually buys from me. I'm talking about emails back and forth with some question and answering and even some Skype conference calling.

Doesn't it depend upon the milestones and goals one sets? Two marketers could have vastly different definitions of what "progress" means to them.

It's not nearly that complicated, Steve.

The OP's post specifically stated what he is talking about. The metrics I like to think about most are ---> how many rounds of golf I get in this month, how much Xbox time did I get in last week, how many fish I get to catch this week etc...but that's not the type of metrics input the OP is looking for here.
