I have never used it for more then a reference tool. It can have power depending on how you apply it and it's value teeters on what kind of marketing plan you have laid out.

Not sure anyone should ever put too much stock into any one tool, no matter how good they think it is. Every tool should be one of many in your kit.

  • I just use it as a reference. Not as much as to gauge the actual traffic but the "relevance" of a website. Any site with an Alexa over 500,000 is a site that sees almost no traffic whatsoever. Any site under 100,000 is busy. That's how I use Alexa, that's all.

Alexa only gets its rankings from people who use Internet Explorer and have instlalled the Alexa toolbar, unless that has changed.

(No one should use IE, IMHO)

I've never used it as an indicator of importance. Ignoring it has not stopped me from first-page rankings.

    Hope that helps!

What is Alexa? - no in reality never cared much about it. As PCRoger said it is an indicator only with measurements from users that have the ALexa Toolbar installed.

I never care about Alexa ranking. However, I heard there are some SEO guys from India used to generate high Alexa rank with some dummy things.. (Not sure about it)

I always stick with google, bing and yahoo. Apart from that, sometimes, use Ask.com too.

I think that it works well as proof in a sales letter to show
traffic trends--like after a launch etc. It gives a FREE
third-party proof of traffic that's easy to understand.

As to the accuracy and how much the website owner
should depend upon it is another question.

I think it is very useful specially when you are doing your keyword research.
You can use it to have a better idea of what is happenning in a niche and his subniches.

Stats give you a better idea!

I was always very sceptical about it and the above posts simply reinforce the fact. How many guys that you know, have installed the Alexa toolbar? How many guys in the whole WWW will or would have installed it? Why? These questions have no right answers, so the Alexa rankings may be just good enough for site flippers, who want to showcase to prospective buyers that the site gets lotsa traffic.
