Who is an Amazon author super success?

It all depends on What would you define to be amazon super success. Can you be a bit more specific

A broad definition would be an author who earns a full time living from their amazon books.

I earn sporadic amounts from my Kindle books. If I spend a lot of time hammering at promoting them, the income goes up, but leave them alone for even a short time and the money dries up.

On the other hand, I'm earning good money editing books for fellow indie authors. I have a first-class degree in English language and another in creative writing. I'd been proofreading and editing along with content writing for 30+ years. One day I realized that if I switched my focus and instead of flogging the proverbial 'dead horse' and switched the time spent promoting my Kindle books to doing more productive editing, it would be time better utilized.

Previously any editing work I did came to me by word of mouth. I began advertising and suddenly I was inundated with inquiries.

I'm still writing for Amazon, I probably always will, but my focus now is 100% on editing for others and it's a decision I'm glad I made.

You hear so much about authors earning thousands of dollars a month on Amazon, I was wondering if anyone here actually does that. Or is it all smoke and mirrors.

It isn't smoke and mirrors; it also isn't for everyone. There are 3 ways to claim success on KDP: luck (Stephenie Meyer springs to mind), hard work, talent and hard work. In every case, though, the author would do well to treat the business model as he or she would most others in online marketing. You need to combine the analytical (category research, cover effects, etc) with the creative (in both fiction and non-fiction). If you hope to break into KDP with the type of subjects we discuss here on WF, then I'd recommend you tap into category areas with least resistence, but of course healthy readership potential, and position yourself initially in the $0.99 to $2.99 sphere. How-to books are actually an extremely strong model (though I don't practice that particular one myself on KDP) because your audience is more forgiving (of writing, of design; good if you're a newb) and, in some cases, hovering between hungry and desperate buyers. I could talk all day if I had the time. Last bit of advice: you'll want to avoid exclusivity, penetrate free or low-priced (to work up some reviews), and get some buying momentum going so that people are coming back for more; in fiction, you'd find series the best way of doing it, though there are plenty of other ways, and in non-fiction you can use a similar tactic, where you're offering more advanced information from book to book. I'm not a writer...I hire other people to write them for me (like most best-seller out there when you think about it. Donald Trump didn't write His Art of the deal best seller book...)

In my opinion it is the easiest and fastest way to make money online by far (Kindle publishing), but like anything in life, there is a learning curve and it takes effort.

Two mistakes I see people make over and over again in this business:

1) Authors who consider themselves as real authors writing books that nobody give a damn about and they end up not selling any ( they have no marketing skills also)...Most of the time they end up on a forum complaining about how Kindle is filled with fake authors, etc etc. They are basically frustrated artists that think their art is important but nobody agrees with them...They don't care about what the market wants, and therefore they are broke.

2) People who enrolled in a Kindle publishing program like mine for example, but only publish one book then give up. If they followed the instructions chances are high they will make money, but like with any programs out there, there is a learning curves. If the person doesn't write at least 5 books, they basically did not even scratched the surface. To get good at something you need a good instruction but you also need PRACTICE. These people will then switch to another method and will also fail. Their mindset is weak and they should get a job.
