Are you emailing your list enough?

We all know about getting too much email. We all know about signing up to a list and then receiving nothing but a constant barrage of 'buy this, buy that' in our inbox (before we end up unsubscribing).

But what about the emails we truly value? Do we apply the same rules about what is 'too much' to those?

No!

For my part, there are several emails / email newsletters I look forward to reading every day. Actually, I would probably read them if they were twice per day. I just love the content and eat it up.

On the flip side I have subscribers who have asked me to send them stuff every day. I have obliged with one of my newsletters, and I have autoresponders set up that are daily or every few days too.

A couple of people have told me that a daily email is too much for them. Okay, so I've created a weekly option. But, truth be told, I am more focused on meeting the wants/needs of the loyal, fanatical minority, than the half-hearted majority.

As you might expect, the 80/20 rule is in play here: a certain minority of your list will tend to be responsible for the vast majority of your revenues, so you're MUCH better off aiming to deliver what they want, than trying to please everyone else (which would be difficult in any case).

So... how often should YOU mail your list? Well, if you are delivering really good content (i.e. not just promos) then I would definitely consider anything between once per week and daily. By all means, test a few options to see the impact on your unsubscribe rate, open rate and, most importantly, your overall bottom line. But keep in mind that it's your bottom line that is most important!

I keep in contact with my list 4 - 5 times a week and it's usually all content, weekly newsletter etc, I only promote to them once or twice a month with quality products (sometimes every couple of months) I find I get a very high response rate probably because 9 times out of 10 I bring value to the table and don't try to shove offers down there throat every day.

Thanks Bryan. Did you reach this balance between content and promos based on lots of testing? Another point I would make is that what works for one audience in one market will differ to what works for another audience in another market. All very interesting!

I don't mind receiving several emails a week, if there's some quality content within. (Marlon Sanders comes to mind.)

BUT, you start slamming me with 3 & 4 a day, and I'm done with you. I really get tired of these "my good friend..." which are really nothing more than affiliate plugs, and no content.

I don't send anything unless I have something to say. I don't have a set number per week but I do believe content is KING. I've made the other mistake of promoting to much, so I made a vow to stay true to providing a service and not selling.

I fully agree. It really depends on content. I have unsubscribed from over 30 lists, many of them top marketers. Thin content emails that teach me nothing and quickly pawn me off to an affiliate offer, not fun. The few lists I am still on really do seem like a friend talking to me.

These guys have given me solid ideas that have helped my biz. I really think they are a model of what email marketing should be.

I mail to my list once per week. I consider the amount of junk mail I get every day and send out only information that is targeted and full of useful information. That helps keep my unsubscribe rate at a minimum.
