When you do your keyword research and check for the number of competing websites do check the keyword in broad phrase or exact terms? and Why?

I use phrase but I am not exactly sure why

You should check all three in my opinion and aggregate the data by listing the top 10 results for each in Excel and researching them thoroughly.

Check indexed pages, do a site:url search to check their indexing and optimisation level, check inlinks, PR, domain age and anything else you can using the tools you have avaialble to you.

TomWood, there is only one true way to check your competition, and that is to look at what's already on the front page.

For quick keyword research I typically type the keyword in Google with quotes around it. I then go to Backlinkwatch: Backlinks Checker Tool - Backlink Watch and do a backlink check on the top 10 websites.

If the keyword competition is relatively low and the top sites don't have many backlinks then I consider this to be a good keyword to target... for easy top 10 rankings.
