Critique My Great Idea

My wife is Chinese and I taught English in Asia before. So I'm building a website similar to this popular one Notes in Spanish – Learn Spanish with Podcast Audio Conversation from Spain. | Learn Spanish with Spanish podcast audio. This is real, exciting conversation from Spain.. The difference is, ours will be a vlog and we'll post videos of us speaking/teaching English in our day-to-day life. We even already have an audience, as my wife and her siblings have massive social network appeal in China.

I need some ideas on monetizing though. I already have an excellent up-sell which is a customized online english program used by many schools here in the US, but I also want to have smaller offers as well, be it premiere videos, ebooks, or something.

Also, can someone point me to some similar sites (even if not in the same industry, like health/beauty/etc) that you feel are successful, that I should be modeling after? It will help me get the feel of how my site should be, including the mailing list, sales page, etc.

Much thanks!

As someone who spends 50% of my time in China I just want to pass on something that I've noticed.

The typical Chinese view of downloads is that they are ephemeral and therefore should be free.

They place more value in physical products. It's worth noting that China is now the biggest market for CD music in the world.

So I would definitely offer the option for all lessons to be shipped on DVD.

Good point and thank you for your input. All of our video episodes will certainly be free, but are you saying I should offer a collection of our episodes for a fee on dvd?

No, but you talked about monetising using ebooks etc. So anything you sell should also be available as a physical product.

    Another point

Chinese and particularly Hong Kong residents like one on one coaching.

My daughter did English teaching in Skype or WeChat sessions with school kids. The parents loved that.

Use your vlog episodes to encourage people to sign up for conversational English coaching perhaps?

We were thinking of doing something like that. The high-end english program we offer is all online and customized to fit the english level of the user. It uses reading, listening, and even speaking to help the user learn english, and continuously evolves to advance their proficiency (it was over $20,000, so it better be good!). But maybe we can offer a 1 on 1 conversation with a native english speaker as part of the package.

Create online tutorial for 2 market segments. First: Learn English for Chinese spoken market. Second: Learn Chinese for English spoken market. And sell them using skillshare. And you can monetize the teaching to your physical product version to both markets. Thanks.
