Default How do you acquire content for your website(s)?

I am curious - How do you get content for your site?

Obviously writing it is an option, and many people use aggregators..

But what other creative methods are out there? And what actually works for you?

Surely there are those webmasters who don't write a lick.. :O

It depends on if you want unique, high quality content?

Write it yourself or buy from a good writer.

You can just get articles from directories and use a nofollow link to protect Page Rank

Ask questions in a forum related to the topic of your site... watch the answers... then create a forum post based on those answers. (Just don't copying n' paste unless you ASK).

Ok, It sounds like you are looking for ideas that are thinking outside of the box. So, I will tell you the craziest thing I have ever done to create content.

I would not expect most people to even understand what I am about to write. But some that use word and excel will understand the concept.

I must say this is not the quality of content that I use now but this was several years ago. I set up columns in an excel spreadsheet. I took articles that I purchased from a lady out of the Philippines. I placed each sentence in a different column. Every other column was left blank... I went down 10 rows with each sentence rewriting the sentences. After I had 10 versions of each sentence, I placed =rand()*100 code in every other column and pasted it all the way down. This assigns a random number to each row for the column.

I created a word file with a mail merge pulling each sentence into the word file and performed a mail merge. This gave me 10 versions of the article. Then I sorted each column of sentences by their random number. Then performed a mail merge again. I did this about 4 times and in the end I had 40 articles that were at least 30% different.

If you are using articles from article directories, the above advice is selfish in my opinion. If you get free good content written by someone else, the least you can do is give a link to them.

One link out on a page isn't going to hurt your site.

Personally, for my main sites I write/produce the content (or outsource to the standards which I would expect from my own content).

I do use some feeds, but these are generally for secondary sites, and are used in a mashup form, rather than directly recycling.

I also encourage user-generated content, so that the sites are always growing.

Nothing creative about this, but I use need-an-article.com and it works great. There is a small monthly fee of like $10, then 500 word articles are around $5 or $6. Some writers are better than others, but it gets the job done and it's cheap in my book.

I like to write some content first. Then get them rewritten to extend their life (so to speak). Outsourcing is the way to go once you've made some money.

Although, I don't have a proper website to show off at the moment, I would prefer stuff written by myself over content bought from other writers(I can't be that bad, can I?)
But I love the above idea. I could never have come up with that!! I have done rewriting work, but never like this! Maybe I'll incorporate your idea sometime. But I think 40 articles for the same idea is too much, unless you're gonna put up the article on thirty-nine different article directories and one on your website.

I only used these articles to post to blogs. I never tried this for the content on my own site. I really thought you would say I was crazy for having this idea... It did help me get my alexa ranking up pretty quick as I received traffic from the social sites...

Go to somewhere like clickbank search your related niche and look for low gravity product thats well written and has good content(and theres plenty)

contact the owner and ask if you can license his content in exchange for a one time fee, this has to be the quickest way I no of to aquire good content in the quickest possible time.

And you would be surprised at how many people are willing to license there products to you as long as you make it clear you are not in direct competition with them.

If you are interested in going down this route pm me and I have a simple email script you can use for contacting the product owners.
