Quick Question about Google Search

Hi guys,
I am new to internet marketing and just recently started writing articles for bum marketing. About a couple of weeks back, I did some keyword research and found some good long-tail keywords with about 3000 to 5000 search results (in quotes) but when I checked them a few days back, the results shoot up to millions in some cases. As you all already know that google has brought some major changes to its search results algorithm, and these changes are sort of a setback for me. I consider myself a complete beginner in this field, and I just want to know how to approach my keywords research now. I know that fact that google is also adding the omitted results in to the total results tally. So, under the circumstances, what should be considered as a reasonable competition? (Previously as you know most bum gurus would tell you that 3000 to 6000 search results in quotes is what you should go for).
Guys I don't know if this question has been asked before but I am desperately waiting for some useful response. Thank you all in advance.

There is no exact figure as the
best number of competition to go
for. Some gurus said less than 20,000.

But normally if you go for higher
    search volume, the number of
competition will go higher. You have
to match both the search volume
    and competition.

If you go for 3k to 6k competition,
you may want to go for keywords
with search volume of at least
    500 to 1k per month.

If you go for 20k competition, you
may want to go for at least
    keywords with search volume of
    3k to 5k per month

    The most important thing is
to get the keywords in the
    domain itself
