Domain Names - What would you do?

While sitting down with this client we also noticed another area where we've hit a fork in the road...

We used the google keyword planner and we noticed that "train your dog from scratch" had about 30 monthly searches when we found a keyword "the best way to train your dog" has 1900 monthly searches and the domain name is available.

Which rout would you take?

Thanks!

I would support Pamela Saputo's choice.

I would add that the content of the blog / website will also be critical in getting front page and top three response to searches. So make sure content is relevant and keywords fit easily and sensibly in blog posts.

i'd go with the root keyword "train your dog"

then add a short word to the end:

    trainyourdognow.com

    trainyourdogpro.com

    trainyourdogquick.com

    Best of luck

Neither. I'd go for something more brandable and/or scaleable.

I see that "train your dog" is the main keyword, so if that keyword have been taken for the domain name, then you can you some another secondary keywords to use as domain name such as:

"best way to train your dog"
    "way to train your dog"
    "train your dog tips"
    "train your dog 360"
    "train your dog 247"
    "train your dog 365"

and always choose .com first, if it's taken then .net is the next choice.

    Good luck to you!

Gambino is spot on in his advice.

Neither of those domains have value; neither worthwhile market value as domains or value as branded marketing tools. As a side note: you never want to buy a domain with the word "the" at the start.

    You have 3 options:
    1. Return to planner and attempt to find a strong EMD (exact match domain) in order to register a domain.
    2. Look at the after sales market for a strong EMD in order to buy a domain.
    3. Register a brandable domain.
You're in a popular niche, so, at a guess, I'd say 1 is out; though it is still worth checking, but you need to save yourself time and run bulk searches of 500 at a time.

The value of an EMD is no longer what it was once. Reason being, the significance of EMD in the Google algo. It does still have value, and will likely always have value, but simply owning the EMD is not a ticket to rank for that EMD.

If you know your way around even basic SEO, you can rank any domain for any keyword or keywords. As such, nowadays you're best off going for a short, catchy, easy to spell, descriptive, brandable name.

Why? Well - think of how else you'll be using that domain name.
    • Watermarks on videos, images, gifs.
    • Watermarks on social branding creatives (ex: covers).
    • Spoken in videos.
    • And the list goes on.
What I prefer to do with a new project is find a valuable domain, whether I have to register or purchase, because it instantly adds value to a venture before the venture is even operational. In the past, I've managed to find 5-figure domains to register, but in some niches you're going to struggle or simply find it impossible.

Use the above information as your guide, and you won't go wrong.
