Work for PPC/SEO Agency for 30% or Sell Websites On My Own for 100%?

Just had a job end with one agency doing customer service / account management... and I did front end website building for another agency last year.

I also have learned some sales and feel I could go on my own and keep all the profits selling websites, then upsell SEO, PPC, etc. to happy customers and keep 100%.

It seems like selling for agencies is much harder... they have too many services that are all a bit overpriced, and they pay low commissions (30% up front + 10% monthly)... they just have the name and credibility and experience.

If I go on my own, it's a lot scarier. but I could focus on websites on the front end, keep 100%, and then upsell services or outsource. I could market the way I want to and be myself.

If you were getting into Offline marketing all over again which way would you go?

Especially if you were laid off, and don't have much money and need to get a few deals quickly to pay the bills?

    If I were laid off, didn't have any income, and needed to pay bills quickly I would hit the pavement hard and find a job locally to keep myself (and family) afloat.

    But don't give up on your dreams of having your own business. Start your web design/SEO/PPC business online in your spare time (nights, weekends, etc). Work at it whenever you can. Sacrifice for it. When you make income, plow it back into your business to get more leads and clients.

    Once your own business is successful and making the kind of income you desire on a consistent basis. . . then is the time to quit your day job and focus 100% on your own business.

    No sense putting the pressure on yourself to make you online business produce quickly . . . it probably won't.

      I appreciate the reply Steve. This was my original thinking too, but it's getting harder and harder to find a job, like I've been doing.

      Typical minimum wage jobs won't pay the bills. I was blessed to get almost double minimum wage for a couple of years because I am older. But my tech skills are lacking... so finding replacement jobs like the ones I had has been tough.

      It seems the only opportunities for me that will pay the bills are commission sells jobs... and now I have some health issues and a daughter with serious issues too. Plus 1 old car that isn't reliable, so leaving home for a job might not work like it would a couple of years ago.

      So because of my unusual circumstances... I haven't found a job I can just go get easily. It does seem like finding just a few clients might be faster and fit better than spending the next month looking for a job that I can actually get.

      Has anyone else been in this situation? (Like stuck in small town, or can't get a regular job due to health issues, and needed to just work hard to do some freelance work, etc?)

    fiverr and upwork

    and work on my business on the side..

    If I was just laid off and needed money bad, I'd be out there busting my butt trying to make it happen instead of posting on here asking and debating about it... Go out and start trying!!

    You should build up your brand and go on your own. Anything you can do for an agency, you can do for yourself, so why not keep the 100%.

    It shouldn't be scarier since you have similar chances of getting clients but a much higher payout, so even if you do a bit worse as far as conversion rate goes, you will still be making more.

    Just make sure you have the skills you will be trying to sell.

      This is exactly what I'm thinking... and I know how to do my own accounting and work from home already...

      Not having leads or cash to run ads for leads has really been the only thing stopping me... so, just having to do it the hard way.

    Focus on selling your own services, but if you need cash at any time, do some work such as for agencies.

    Your own business is worth a lot more to you in the long-term, but can take some time to set up and establish. But it's more profitable and more satisfying, for most people, in the long-term.

    Do what you've been doing this whole time, build up a couple sites and start selling them anywhere you can (including here). Offer your services or any skills you have to anyone who needs it. It's not hard to find leads and because of your situation you can work for cheaper than most people in your market.

    Build up your relationships and reviews for your new business and slowly you will build a brand.

    Once you have that, you can begin to do some advertising and by this point your business will start scaling and you may need to outsource your work and grow.

    Sounds simple, but it really is that easy. People over complicate things and talk themselves out of taking that first step. Just get started right now and give it a shot. What do you have to lose?
