Building an email list from within a wp plugin?

I am in the process of developing a WP plugin, but will be selling exclusively through a 3rd party website where i have no ability to capture emails. I sell the plugin, the user installs, done.

I don't want to lose this opportunity to capture emails, so I am thinking of another strategy. What if I had a link or email subscription option in the admin area for the plugin? How could I do that without annoying the user? I wouldn't want to hound the user, but also wouldn't want it hidden away at the bottom of a random help page.

The idea would be to offer some kind of relevant course or special updates for subscribers.

Any thoughts?

You're giving up control of your product and it's distribution. That is never a good idea.

It's so easy these days to set up your own web site, your payment system, and delivery system to purchasers. You can still have affiliates and 3rd parties selling for you.

Is there a legitimate reason why you feel you have to "sell exclusively through a 3rd party?" Remember, marketing is all about the customer and what's best for her/him. I think your plan of asking for email subscriptions after the purchase will get you far fewer subscribers than you could have otherwise.

That's a good point - I have just been thinking in terms of profit on those 3rd party sales (less fees for exclusive products). But you're right, I am limiting my ability to distribute for a little extra cash (of which I could generate through other channels).

Have a free no brainer upgrade through the admin panel. Updates or course to me is not enough. I wouldn't signup for that.

P.S. If its something like Envato then you are entirely justified to sell exclusively through them and risk the loss of control. They bring some SERIOUS traffic and sales and companies have made themselves some KaChing in doing so - if its not bringing in that kind of Envato traffic then I'd reconsider a third party

      It is Envato.

I'm just looking to get my feet wet and get something up and running and in the hands of customers. Then I can refine the product and, if I decide, sell non-exclusively later.

You should probably consider selling it through something like JVzoo or warriorplus. That way you will be building your buyers list and not some third party seller getting the buyers list

I use JVZoo and Warrior Plus, and they have built in list integration, but before that a lot of marketers would send the buyer right to a page with an opt-in form on it and once the buyer opted-in, then they would be automatically redirected to the download page.

Usually, they would ask people to do this so they could deliver updates and add-ons to the product in the future, and they would also mention that they would get in touch to let the buyer know about other quality products.

Personally, this is not how I would do it, and you would have to make sure that this was not against any TOS of any third party involved in your sales process, but I used to buy quite a few products before list integration was introduced and as I remember, I had to opt-in to access many a purchase.

Times have changed, and maybe this is not acceptable anymore, so you would have to do some research.

As I said, I never used the above method, even when I was selling before list integration. What I would do is offer an irresistible free course on the download page and that would link to a squeeze page and the buyer would opt-in to get the free course.

It used to work very well. In order for that to work, you need a really great bonus product. Also, you need to remember that you will never capture 100% of your buyers like that, as no matter how good the free course is some will not want it.

I would think Envato would offer some kind of way to capture your buyer's emails. It's a hugely popular network and I'm surprised they don't offer some kind of integration with your autoresponder.
