Recommendation on Best Freebie for Development & Design Agency

Hello everybody, i own a development and design agency. We have been in business for some years but lately we are thinking about working a little more on our blog which was never develop to its full potential and was thinking about our susbscribers as well. In particular i was thinking about giving away a valuable freebie to them. In your opinion what would be the best freebie for a development and design agency? I am thinking about a free e-book on how to become a freelancer from scratch or was even thinking about offering a free logo design (really simple but good looking, which takes me around 2 minutes to design) for every user that subscribes!

What do you think? Would it be too much to offer a custom logo design to every subscriber?

What are some other freebies ideas for a design agency?

Thanks in advance

e-book is a good idea, but i wouldn't do it about how to be a freelance, you will be attracting the wrong type of crowd.

Instead maybe about website site development, design principles, launch your first website ,etc, i am assuming you targeting website owners

Hey there, i thought about a guide on how to become a freelancer because many of our design services are oriented to small business owners and entrepreneurs.

What do you think about the logo idea?

The only time a book on how to become a freelancer would make sense is if your target market was people who want to become freelancers. If those people are already running businesses, they probably won't be looking to start over.

Now, if you targeted failed small business owners with bills to pay...

I'm going out on a limb, and guess that you would much rather have clients that can pay their bills, especially yours.

Think about why a business owner would consider hiring a design/development agency. The answers are More and Less.

More leads, sales, exposure, status, ultimately profits.

Less time spend on things outside of the main business, less expense over doing design/development internally, less time spent learning various tools or even learning basic design, etc.

What freebie can you offer that speaks to those desires? (Hint: "how to become a freelancer" ain't it.) Even better, can that freebie be customized/targeted to different verticals? Think along the lines of "7 Things Every [niche vertical] Needs to Know About Using Design to Get More Leads".

It really depends on your target market. Are you targeting people who want to become freelancers? If not, then that doesn't make any sense to me.

Also, what do most of your customers buy from you? If it's logo designs, then aren't you shooting yourself in the foot by giving that away? Especially if it's a quick logo design that could ultimately make people think that that's your standard work product?

I'd look at something more generic. Like designing a few themes and having them coded. Something like that would provide a lot more value to potential customers and would actually be valuable to a wider group of people. Especially when you consider that themes sell for around $50. I'd also put a link to your site in the footer and I'm sure a lot of people will leave it there meaning more potential traffic and business for you.

I though about this too. We do offer logo designs but the logos i want to offer to subscribers for free are are pretty simple logos compared to the ones that are not free which are real professional works.

What I planned for my design studio was to give random tips to the user whenever they land on the website. Something small like "Use progressive jpegs to increase page load time" and then a refresh button to show a new tip. And after 5 tips, the refresh button would change to a link saying "Looking for more tips to optimise your site. Get a Free Consultation Today"

This whole process converted a lot better, because after 5 free tips, you are already assumed to be an expert in your field and people click for a free consultation a lot more.

    Hope that helped

    PPG19,

I've been there (except I did a lot more than design, we had a full blown web development agency).

Here is what you can offer:

IF they already have a website, you can do a free audit, which can include:
    • Overall analysis of UI/UX of their "old site" (ex. hard to find a page, design needs refreshing, 404 internal links, missing pages, bad text, non-seo content, etc.) There are tools for this, but it can done in less than half hour
    • Security audit - (https://sitecheck.sucuri.net//) if you offer solution do that
    • Mini-report on how website helps local businesses (you can find this data online and put it together in one nice PDF (dis: http://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/co...1yvxzykskpexmp)

IF THEY DO NOT have da website ...Give them enough reasons, they will order sh!t from you

Keep it simple and offer a custom logo.Since it takes only 2 minutes of your time.

Every site owner questions the quality of their own logos for every new site
and always wants to have one done by a real professional.

I would suggest choose something that you can automate.

Offering a quick logo design is a bad decision for a few reasons, first because a quick logo can't be of great quality, second when traffic to your website increases ultimately you have to change your freebie, otherwise you will be spending hours designing free logos.

Personally I would stick with free audit or an ebook.

There are tools which will create an awesome audit report for you with just a click of a button.

If you choose to go with the ebook route I would suggest make it relevant to webdesign in some way.

For example: "5 tips to turn your website into a lean mean lead generating machine"

or may be "6 things to keep in mind before you hire a webdesigner"

    Hope it helps.

      .
Agree 100%. Also I think it would be unlikely they would be willing to pay after receiving one for free. If they do want another logo it's because they weren't happy with the one you gave them for free.

Thank you for all your ideas and suggestions. I do realize that offering a custom logo, even if pretty simple, is time consuming. If it takes me 2 to 3 minutes (literally this is the time i was planning to spend on designing one of this logos) it means that for 10.000 subscribers i will have to spend 13 days (333.333333.... hours) in total to design this logos eheheh.

I like the idea of a free custom theme because it's all automated.

The Logo Design guide is a good idea too but as someone else has said offering a custom logo or even the guide on how to design a logo could be counterproductive.

I am still thinking about a guide on how to become a freelancer from scratch because many of our customers are looking for that information.

Still deciding :S but thanks for all your advice

No offense, but "free logo" is fools errands...because, logo that takes 3 minutes to make...i wouldn't want it even for free

Generally, running a audit can be automated, but not really, unless you pay for it.

I really like suggestions about free guide. I didn't realise that you have so many candidates for freebies, yeah, at that number, ****it, send them a cheap PDF

Hey there TrueStory, i can draw a nice logo really quickly. I have been a designer for more than 10 years now so i can do that pretty fast . Of course it won't be the same quality of a paid logo design but still good overall.

Yes, i know those tools. Myseoaudit is the coolest in my opinion...

You seem a bit fixated on the freelancing guide, so run with it. Just be very careful in targeting a niche that really wants to earn a side income by freelancing.

Offering such a guide to business owners who don't want another job will sort them out, but it may cost you as much to sort people out as in. Be wary of a disconnect between "design and development" and "how to make money online as a freelancer", and have a plausible explanation handy.
