How do you stay on track and get back into focus?

About an hour ago, I was checking my yahoo to see if I got a reply from someone who's business system I bought about a question I had asked. I did, and got the info I needed to get back to work. upon logging out of yahoo, It goes straight to their homepage.

And I seen a news story about how an astronaut said outer space has a weird smell, it sounded interesting so I read it. yada yada yada, here I am an hour later and almost forgot what I was going to do in the first place. I'm sure some of you probably have the same thing happen from time to time, where you lose your focus for a bit. It's not like a job where you have a boss to hold you accountable.

This happens often to me so I try to keep my side tracking to a minimum. But it used to be rampant for me so I searched out methods to keep me on track.

Here are some of the tactics I use to get back in focus.

I have an activity Journal (just a plain notepad file) where I list what I am working on. So If I do forget for a moment, I can view it and see what I was last working on.

I place sticky notes on my monitor with my goals and objectives on them, and when I look at them and I'm wasting time, I know to get back to work.

Also, I have my current project and it's steps listed on a dry erase board next to my desk, so If I don't know what to do I can look at it and get back on track.

I'm Interested if you have any triggers or tactics that you use to get back in focus and stay focused?

While having a list of the important things I need to accomplish I schedule my free time or fun activities. Also I only work in short bursts followed by a shorter break. I seem to accomplish a lot more that way.

Also I would say simply reminding myself why I am doing what I am doing before I start keeps me more focused and determined to get the job done.
