I think people enjoy the jerk style of marketing as they wanna know more. They think "how does this jerk make money by being an ass?" I think it has its pros and cons though.

Q: What is one of the keys of successful marketing? A: Getting an emotion based response from your audience Too many people try to tell you about how great their product is, but without an emotional hook. You need an emotional hook if you're going to sell well. The Rick Jerk appeals to some pretty base emotions/feelings, jealousy, anger, humiliation to name a few. He's trying to push that big red button on your forehead that makes you snap and say "I'm not a loser, I'll show you, I'll buy your product to prove it". I think it's really interesting how he's tapped a new angle, and it obviously works - how many IM products are still being talked about years after their release, not many! My big takeaway from RJ is: Always have an emotional hook in your marketing Cheers, Ben |

This is something you can make work if you have the balls and a certain amount of online charisma to pull it off. One big advantage of this type of marketing is that it's very viral who hasn't heard of the rich jerk |

You market to individuals. Each individual has their own set of hot buttons that will cause them to take action of some sort, either positive or negative. Insult marketing is exactly that....insulting. MY personal hot button for this works along these lines; insult me and your wonderful offer goes directly to the trash while you go on my personal blacklist. If I've joined your list and you send me two emails in one day, same thing, you're history. But that's just me. Your mileage, of course, may vary.

It works for RJ ... he pretty much perfected that persona ... but I've seen people copycat him in a disastrous way .... It doesn't work for fat people. RJ insults everyone equally. I've seen some Fat Loser type insult sites go up and heard people talking in forums about how badly they were received and the hate emails they received. I'm sure there are a lot of niches that would be equally offended, so you have to use caution when you use it. Use it right and it can be golden ... use it wrong and you will offend an entire market segment. |

Pretty interesting to see such a long thread on a marketing forum about a marketing method that DEOSN'T work! Seems like it's working in this thread right now. -Ray Edwards |
