Newbie Coming Into the IM Game

Hello everybody,

My name is Aaron, I'm what you would consider a newbie at all this internet marketing business. Reading about the potential money in online marketing got me curious and very interested.
But, I'm not exactly sure where to start. Reading many different things I learned of so many options which are available, but not which ones are good and ones to avoid.
So, I have come here to ask you guys for some tips. I'd like to know some of the options that exist, and which ones to stay away from. I've taken some basic financial classes, but nothing that has taught me any of these acronyms that people use frequently, so I'd like to be pointed to an "index", of sorts, that maybe lists the basic acronyms and terms.
Anyways, I have searched for these answers and have come up with nothing. Please, feel free to give any tips that you think would help, direct me to a helpful page, or just call me an idiot if you wish.

Also, an off-topic question: I currently have a part-time job and would maybe like to keep it, doing both Internet Marketing and my job at the same time. I have done a few calculations of sorts and have decided that I would really like to be able to make 900 dollars per month(on average) over the next 19 months for something big that I will need money to spend on in the future.
My question is: Do you guys think that 900 dollars per month(I realise that the first few I won't get that much, but for later on) is a realistic goal for putting in 10-15 hours a week into my online marketing pursuits?

Anyways, thank you all for any help that you give. It is very much appreciated!

Hey aaron, welcome to the forums and to internet marketing.

1.) I can't really tell you what you should stay away from but I can tell you where I started. My cousin turned me on to internet marketing and he sent me "the newbie workbook" It's a step by step 30 day system to what I believe are the basics of article marketing. It teaches you about things like SEO (search engine optimization), search engine rankings. It takes you through 30 days of picking a product, creating your first blog, reviewing the product, getting traffic to the website. In my opinion it really is a good place to start. Send me a pm if your interested in getting it.

2.) I am not sure where to find an index really but most of the terms I learned through google. When I see something I don't understand I just google it and you can get the answer.

3.) I think that $900 a month should be possible at 10-15 hours a week, it really all depends on the effort your put in during those 10-15 hours. What methods you use, how fast you can scale, and your traffic methods.

If you have any other questions just send me a pm I will try my best to steer you in the right direction. I'm not guru or anything, in fact I still consider myself a learner, but I do know the basics so I can help get you started.

First of all, like in the case for many, please do not fall for any claims of 'get rich quick' schemes, there is no such thing. Believe me, you will be bombarded with many. I am not saying all are false, but they will highlight the bright side only.

Yes, it is possible to make it in IM with deligent smart hard work, and yes, making upto 900 dollars is very much a possible reality, over a period of time, putting in 10-15 hours of work. But for that, you need to keep focussed on building a solid foundation.

Shall surely direct you to useful resources.

900 dollars per month is definitely possible. Make sure to build a list as this is a huge asset long-term

Well, thanks so far for the answers guys. I definitely appreciate it.

But, for example, googlerankingexpert reffered to a "list", and I went ahead and looked it up and found a few things that it could mean, but I don't have a perfect understanding of it(and a whole bunch of other things, too).

    Hi Aaron,

When i first started IM, i avoided the internet marketing niche for the simple reason
that i don't teach people how to make money online when i have not make a single cent yet ....

it's also a well known fact that many people will change into their own
affiliate link when they buy clickbank product so you will not get a
single cent of commission. The winner will be the vendor.

To get started, you can follow the simple steps below:

    1. Find a hungry crowd - people who have a problem and is desperate to solve it now

    2. Find out what they really want - research forums for problems and solutions, taking note of the words/phrases they use, you will need them as keywords later on.

    3. Give it to them - now you have all the facts, you will put them together and create
a blog and make some posts.

All the 3 steps above does not require you to spend a single cent.

    hope these will help you....

You can do it with 10-15 hours work per week but be prepared to spend 40 hours a week learning and researching.

Doing the actual work is the easy bit. Learning to do it right and what to do is the time consuming bit.

Join a good coaching program and you will be able to reduce your time wasted.

    Hi Aaron,

Start with something very simple. Choose a product in a niche that you are passionate about, go to that product homepage and see if they have an affiliate program. If they do, join it. If they don't, google it, see if someone like CJ.com has one.

Then set up a wordpress blog on your own domain. Use the Thesis theme if you can affors it. Get someone to make a nice header (on Digital Points Forum or here). Write a product review around 1000 words long. Add your affiliate link in the review. Do keyword research on your niche. Then sign up for Ezine articles and write at least 3 articles for each keyword. Link two of them to the first one. Continue until you have written about all keywords. Then do it over.

Simple strategy! You will make money this way.

Welcome, Aaron, like the good folks in here have advised,
I'd say you should keep your part time job while working
on your IM. Even though some folks will say you should
burn your bridges (it can work also), it's best to first learn
the ropes and start making money before taking the full
    time plunge into IM.

    Hi Aaron,

I still have a fill-time job which I enjoy and work on my IM at night when my kids are asleep. 10-15 hours is definitely enough time to build your knowledge and your own personal success.

There might be times where things are not going your way, just stick to it and make sure you don't waste any money on products promising the world.

I am quite lucky as I have had support from my cousin who introduced me to IM, so if you can, get to know other Internet Marketers, this forum is a great start. Build your relationship, and if you build some trust you can help and support each other.

I actually spent at least 1.5 years planning before starting on my site. A bit overkill I admit, but it was in my spare time. I don't think you need to spend that much time planning, but as others suggested, do your homework, and ask the right people the questions to help you on your way.

That is enough ranting from me for one night.
Wish you the best of luck.
