How many articles to launch a blog?

27 replies
I've been writing content for an "authority" blog in my niche. Right now I only have about six 700+ word articles.

Every blog starts somewhere, and I know day one of publishing i'm not going to have hundreds of visitors. At the same time it seems silly trying to drive traffic to a site that has four to fiveish categories and only an article or two per category.

What are some ways you all get blogs off the ground outside of the obvious "hire a writer" for content?

    /QUOTE

    Enough for you to:

    1. Grab the attention of your target viewers and effectively funnel them from your traffic sources to your site;

    2. Keep them interested and entertained to continue viewing your onsite content;

    3. Make them think and feel that you're a friendly authority expert in your niche;

    4. Entice them to engage and connect with the personality and character of your content;

    5. Make them desire more of your content by signing up to your mailing list; and

    6. Compel them to trust and try out your recommendations ...

    So, to answer your question -- You need to know how much reading your target audience needs to do for you to achieve these goals ...

    In my experience, in the industries we operate and for my target audience -- To close a B2B service contract with an ICT corporation in BC Canada (this was in 2006), we just needed to start with an About Us page, an Our Products & Services page, a Contact Us page, A Privacy Policy page and two blog posts.

    Why wait? When you first launch, its going to take a few months for search engines to start taking it seriously anyways. Domain age in SEO is a contested topic, but if it were me, I'd start publishing immediately (one article at a time - not all at once) as long as you're sure that you can consistently deliver 2-5 posts per week.

    the first time I think you should write at all about 2- 3 post, after two months you could post a lot more, gradually grow your site with sufficient credibility then please post a lot

    Having six 700 words articles are good enough. Just launch it and make sure you keep adding article on the regular basis. After you have launch it, I suggest you to immediately submit your sitemap to search engine to inform Google to visit and take note of your site. Once they have visited your site, Google will keep a record of your content.

    So the best is to have new article posted more frequently in the beginning so that Google sees the site is being updated with fresh content and have a good impression about your site. That will help you later to rank and get that "authority" status.

    Ofcource, like every venture of life.
    It's one step at a time.

    You are not going to pour in thousands of articles overnight neither is the traffic going to go just the way you want it.

    The most important thing is having a focus and sticking to it.

    What's the essence of the blog?
    Does it solve the overwhelming people's problem?
    How do you intend to reach these type of people?
    How blogs do you want to post daily or can you post daily?

    Create a plan and stick to it.

    On the aspect of traffic, you should optimise your blog and also every post you make so that it can be viable on the search engine.

    One of my Niches got more than 10,000 page views with the first post.

    It was a very complete tutorial that wasn't done before.

    I promoted it in Reddit (without ads) and it went viral.

    During the first day it received 7,000 visits and then 3,000 over the same week.

    Create top content and you will receive traffic since day one if you promote it.

    Organic traffic will come later.

    Not to be in a rush with it but let things unfold organically. The key really is not how much content but the quality plus the consistency it gets posted especially based on what is trending at the current time. Plenty of backlinking but again done all naturally with quality links behind it!

    Once you have a decent size list.

    Don't launch anything until you have a list first.

    That's how you build suspense and hype for that launch.

    You want to hit 'publish' and then see no traction whatsoever.. for at least a couple of years?

    Or do you wanna have people talking about it, sharing your content, driving traffic to you etc, on the same day you launch your blog... or anything else?

    Build a list first.

    ..YMMV..

    There is no need of more quantities just start it whatever you have even if it one or two but always focusing the quality contents and at the same time for the regular updating of your website.

    Hello, It doesn't matter how many posts do you have? Most important thing is consistency. If you think that you don't have enough time to write every day then schedule your posts at least one in a week and according to your time and content volume maintain a content marketing calendar. Thanks :-)

    With 6 posts total, it's way too early to worry about the categories. If those 6 posts are the right posts, it's enough to launch, even in a small way.

    My strategy is to make those first posts "foundation content", the things I want my audience to know in order to make the following posts more useful. Then create a "Start Here" page and promote that. Start building your list(s).

    Once the foundation is in place, start seeking ways to get yourself in front of other bloggers' audiences - things like guest posting, forum marketing, meaningful blog commenting, etc.

    Have a plan for adding content to your own blog. Since you want an authority site, each post should in some way add authority. Don't post just to post, and don't just post clickbait. Keep building that list.

    You should be spending 20% of your time adding content to your blog and 80% promoting it.

      Second paragraph sounds like a decent idea. I can't readily visualize what you mean by the "start here" page though. Do you have any example blogs that use this I could look at for reference?

    You can start your blog with just single post. However you have to maintain the consistency of your post and have to update your blog regularly. Providing quality content is very first step of blogging which will lead you to the success.

    With as many as you want, the more the merrier.

    What truly makes a difference is to keep posting, keep learning what's working and then do more of it. Rinse and repeat.

    I personally don't start marketing a site until it has enough content that an average reader will not be able to consume all the content in 1 session.

    If someone can go through all content in 1 go, it can create the impression of a thin site in the minds of readers.

    Stop over thinking it! Launch with 2, 1 as your intro to who you are, 2 for them to read straight off if you've wet their whistle enough and from there just make sure you keep it consistant!

    Think of it like a box set, you always want one more episode so 2 is plenty ðŸ˜Å"

    Here is the most effective way to get your blog off the ground:

    Just have a "Coming soon" page set up on your homepage, which should at the same time be your landing page with your e-mail goody. You don't need a single post. The game is ultimately not about driving traffic to your blog, but about building your list. You build your list with that opt-in.

    Now you need a way to drive traffic to your "Coming soon" page. Guest posts can be massively useful for that. FB ads. Content upgrades. Round-up posts. (For the latter two you have to publish on your own blog though.)

    Writing posts for your own blog when it's still a ghost town is a massive waste of time.

    Look into smartblogger.com. Jon Morrow had 13,000 subscribers on his list before he ever published a single post on his own blog (mostly through guest posting). That's how it really works.

    It's hard to say, but I have been in several situations over the years where I have made more money off of a single web page than from an entire site. So this proves to me that is the quality not the quantity that really counts. Also it has to do with the market you're targeting as well.

    Bottom Line: There are no hard and fast rules as to how much content you need to start. I feel that the 7 articles you have is plenty enough to launch, but that's just my opinion. You have to weigh out different variables and decide and do what you feel it best for you. But remember, sometimes it's the start that stops you, so don't overthink it. You can always add more content as you go along.

    You should start with a single post. blog is the something which takes time to build itself. So don't worry about how many post needed to start. just start to write and publish them as soon as possible.

    So if you wants to start a blog then a single post is enough.

    It is not on how much to launch, but on how much value these contents can give to your users.
    You need to give them a good impression, a quality blog where they can come back for more.

    I don't think you need a lot of articles in the beginning. start by posting ONE article (pick the best one) to catch people's attention. You can promote the article through social media. A few days later, you can post the second article. You can also post an article once a week.

    If you notice, some blogs get more personal. Some authorities on topics provide personal experiences to make a stronger point. So tell something about yourself. Don't be afraid to put a good picture of you as the author. It helps to put a face with a name.

    As others have said, a couple of articles are more than enough to launch! The key is the quality, that's what will get you readers and climbing the SERPs. I'd recommend not rushing to add more articles for the launch unless they're genuinely going to enhance the quality of your output.
