At an interesting crossroads... now what next- should I focus on facebook, Pinterest or SEO?

Hey everyone,

So the site I built a few weeks ago is now looking good, and I've got 7,500 followers on pinterest now, a connected Facebook page and starting to rise in the SEO rankings, getting a few clicks too though not yet sales. I now have to make a decision and decide which avenue will lead to making most money longterm for my site as of course I will be too thinkly spread if I try to do all three at once.

The SEO KWs I'm beginning to rank for are long tale, and have between 50- 300 searches a month, I'm starting to reach the top 20 for a few of them so a bit of more work needs to be done. I've been creating backlinks by uploading some of the infographics I created for Pinterest and putting them onto Document sharing sites.

My pinterest Pins get a modest number of repins, but nothing huge to shout about yet- but I've learnt how to create simple and quite good images, it's a matter of testing what works best and starting to get the hang of it now. I am also direct linking to affiliate offers away from my site on here so am testing quite a few things some of the affiliate offers are getting a small number of shares.

Thirdly I've been looking at facebook Ads to boost my page, I have used Facebook ads before- but because my page/site focuses not on a single niche- though several of the niches tie together- I may need to focus it more (or maybe create a page for each seperate subniche)

The way I see it is that

1) Facebook ads will provide the quickest results- I will know if a post leads to positive ROI quickly or not, but I'll need to do more work on the page/brand, or split the page into two or three seperate pages.

2) Pinterest- I could learn it much more and really figure out types of images that go viral, or the trending items etc.

3) SEO- the hardest work and most long term but may provide the best results long term overall.

How would you proceed, what would you focus on?

This is probably a good start. I would focus on just your most popular niche to start.

Yes What I may do is se which niche gets most interactions, or the first conversion then siphon it off into a seperate page.

Personally, FB may be the only one I would really fool with. Not saying Pinterest is not legit and potentially good. I just tend to limit myself in that regards.

Too much "business" for my taste lol

Yep I only started to consider Facebook seriously after I was hired to run the page of a FB page for an organisation, and noticed the owner was boosting posts. Do you use it a lot? And is thee any advice/strategy you have?

Yeah about the only one I use with Social Media. Took me awhile even for that

you are making head way with pinterest now so lets focus on that...

as for the rise in the SERPS keep that in the back burner and do what you're doing.. You can't rush that..

Back to pinterest, you need to work that angle and connect with other pinterest influencers.

Pin their pins and ask them to do that same.. You can also provide cash incentives.

I'd also test promoted pins to see what that gets you.

if you are having trouble creating beautiful images then just use Canva and Pixaby for stock images. All free..

Make sure your images link to a squeeze page.

    Best of luck

PS hold off with FB for now, create SMART goals around pinterest first and lets see what that yields

I've started pinning images from posts on Facebook to sort of double up as a test. I have indeed been making some pins and images using Canva etc. I'm also a member of a few group boards now that have many thousands of followers so that's another avenue.

Yep this is it, because my SEO skills are quite basic, I don't really have a plan for it, is there a blueprint you can reccommend? I've bookmarked some Moz articles to read in detail soon.

I've always found it beneficial to break down your niches into the smallest parts possible and then doing separate pages/social accounts for each, but I suppose it depends on the niches you're targeting.

Pinterest can be great for the right products/services.

Why not have a companion Twitter account to refer traffic to your FB page as well?

Yes that's the conclusion I've come to, it's really down to two main niches really (both of which have broad related subniches), and I think think I'm going to split them in two (maybe two sites as well). I am also looking at doing some ecommerce stuff to put on Pinterest and may have a seperate FB page if the products do not clearly fit into either of these two niches.

I finw twitter tricky mosly because it's so instantaneous- have oyou had much luck building a Twitter account/following/traffic?

I'd recommend taking a look at your onpage SEO to make sure there aren't any issues with duplicate content, messy indexing, etc. It sounds like you have other aspects of SEO under wraps, but the onpage aspect could benefit you hugely. Organic ranking in search engines will give you great long results as opposed to short term gains from Facebook ads, although of course don't neglect that either!

Yes I already ran a site audit using SEMrush which found a tonne of things, I'm paying someone to fix some of these as we speak. Do you focus on linking quality content or building backlinks/social signals in general?

Great, that's a good start. Do you mean producing quality content or just linking to other people's quality content? The former is absolutely key - prioritise that to start with, then building good quality backlinks and social signals will become a lot easier.

It's unique content on subjects I know quite a bit about. They have started to move up search engines without me even having done onpage SEO and other simples things correctly, now I need to do that plus backlink building.

I've now linked the site to the facebook page- the facebook page to a twitter profile, so I have a circular marketing system, I'm going to be posting some content that gets cross posted on different channels and see what happens.

I also paid for some ads to sell a couple of t-shirts- I got some engagement and a trickle of new likes on the page, but am thinking of pulling off one of the good articles I have, putting it into a FB post then using that post to get more likes on my page.

In my niche of photography I find social media sends me traffic that are looking for bargains or freebies and google traffic gets me people who will pay real money so most of my effort goes into seo. Social Media helps with brand awareness.

    What do you most enjoy?

    FB, Pinterest or SEO?

Pick what you love working. Leave behind the heavy-feeling, less fun choices.

I'd leave behind SEO and Pinterest to focus on Facebook. Because FB feels fun for me to work. I dig connecting with people thru the site, via message, Liking, commenting and sharing their info. I have had success with SEO and Pinterest but when working those strategies I feel like I'm working a system, or manipulating a technique to get results, which feels boring to me.

    Again, that's just me

    Happy Marketing!

The one which is the most "Fun" I guess is Pinterest, and facebook because it's relatively quick and easy. Having said that the small (but regular) work I've done SEO wise over the months has yielded some results, for my first site (one I setup a while ago) I'm now ranking just outside the top ten for quite a few phrases, so I've been doing SEO work mostly these last 2 days. I may do say 3 days SEO, monitor for SERPS changes, then do 3 days Pinterest/FB and follow the pattern for 2 weeks and then decide after which one yields more results.

Yes I'm well aware Pinterest boards themselves can rank, I've been doing work on one in particular for site #1, I'm going to put the board link into SERPLab to see if it can read the rankings for it.

Indeed, I have an optimised board with lots of related images that go direct to money site. Pinterest links in themselves are no-follow aren't they?

I'm not sure if the links are nofollow or not. It doesn't really matter in this case. My point really was that many people use Pinterest as a visual search engine and that individual pins should use basic SEO, particularly strategic use of keywords in their "money" pins. I don't take the time to do this when pinning content from other sites or repining. But I do recommend spending time to optimize pins that benefit you in some way.

Yes agreed. And I've created some good visuals related to the money site using Canva.com and other things. I inspected the elements and pins do appear to be nofollow, however my Google Chrome nofollow plugin usually shows the links in red, which they do not, which makes me none the wiser if they are dofollow or not!
