Offline marketers - speak at conventions!

I just got back from Dragoncon, a huge science fiction/fantasy etc. convention in Atlanta. I gave a talk on Twitter marketing there. Ten minute talk (because there were 3 other speakers on the panel) - netted me several new clients.

And I am sure I would have gotten a lot more clients if I had remembered to bring my business cards, and had brochures printed up to leave on the dozens of merchant's tables around the convention hotels.

All I had to do was contact the convention organizers, tell them my credentials, and I was in.

So who else could speak at a convention? Well, just for starts, people with an expertise on:

1.)SEO
2.) Optimizing websites
3.) Marketing products and services online
4.) Blogging for profit
5) Establishing brand identity online.

One of the other talks at Dragoncon was on Spam, Spim, and Splogs. No, I don't know what the latter two are.

So a great way to get new offline customers is to contact the convention bureaus in the large cities in your state, find out what conventions are coming up, contact the organizers of the conventions that you are interested in, and offer to give a presentation on your area of expertise. Do it for free. The convention organizers are more likely to say yes and the exposure and clientele and also the credibility that you will gain are more than worth it.

    Thanks Dana.

P.S. I think Splogs mean Spam Blogs. I have no idea what a Spim is. lol

Hey Dana - great offline marketing tip to contact convention organizers!

We know about chambers of commerce and small biz dev. centers...this tip from you is a real gem!

Funny about the biz cards! LOL

Calling the owners of the local meet up groups in your area and 'associations' (big ones) also works real well.

      Spim is instant messaging spam.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Coming from the Queen of Offline Marketing, that is quite a compliment!

I would add - in all honesty Dragoncon is probably not even the most lucrative type of convention to target because it is geared towards artists and creative types. Who usually don't have big budgets. I just happen to be a huge science fiction/fantasy fan so it was fun to attend no matter what.

But keep that in mind when picking which conventions to speak at - some audiences are going to have bigger budgets than others.

Hey Dana! Thanks for the complement!

Science fiction fan eh?...well I must admit I attend the Laughlin UFO conference and the LAX life consciousness expo for fun (hmmm....not sure if good or not to announce that here! )...and it is a great place to meet prospects as well (as well as just having fun)- and yes - some are indeed on a tight budget...however their niches have huge demand so potential JV's as well.
