Using product images from Amazon

I am creating an amazon niche site, and I was wondering about sourcing product images. Since I'm an affiliate and don't actually own any of the products, I can't take any of my own photos.

Are we able to use the images from Amazon, if we are promoting their products? If you are allowed to use them, do you have to cite them someway?

Yes.
Don't forget to put a disclaimer that your website "...is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program ..." (google it for example).

I usually put this paragraph:

"All brand names and images are Registered Trademarks of their respective companies. All manufacturers names, numbers, symbols and descriptions are used for reference purposes only, and it is not implied that any part listed is the product of these manufacturers or approved by any of these manufacturers."

Hey, Brendon, hows it going man?

In regards to your question, I think you should be fine.

In the end, your customers will eventually find out that they're purchasing the product from Amazon so I don't think there's any need to "cite" the photo and mention where it came.

A crappy photo vs an Amazon photo makes a HUGE difference in the customer actually purchasing a particular item.

Plus, I think that Amazon would love for you to use good photos to advertise their products. . . they'd move more inventory and of course increase their revenue.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I was thinking the same thing, if it's bringing in sales for them, why should it be a problem. My only concern was was if there was a set of rules or guidelines that you had to follow to use their images.

I get scared for the fact that they can disable your account for small things, like not having the disclaimer clear or visible enough. I would hate to lose my account for something simple like not citing, or something similar.

i was under the impression you could use amazon images if you're selling those amazon products.

i recommend GIMP for photo editing

Pixabay for more free images

and Canva for site graphics.

I would strongly suggest you look at the Amazon TOS.

It's been awhile but I don't think you can use an image from Amazon other than what their tools will provide.

I know for sure it's against their TOS if for example you take a screen shot of reviews for a product on Amazon and publish it on your site.

I had a look in the 'Associates Program Operating Agreement' and found this.

1. Description of the Program
The purpose of the Program is to permit you to advertise Products on your site and to earn advertising fees for Qualifying Purchases (defined in Section 7) made by your end users. A “Product” is any item sold on the Amazon Site, other than any product that is listed on this page (collectively, “Excluded Products”). A Product may also include certain services, if any, expressly included on the Associates Program Advertising Fee Schedule. In order to facilitate your advertisement of Products, we may make available to you data, images, text, link formats, widgets, links, and other linking tools, and other information in connection with the Program (“Content”). Content specifically excludes any data, images, text, or other information or content relating to products offered on any site other than the Amazon Site.

I'm not usually very good at deciphering agreements. But does it mean you can't download the image, host it then link to their site?

That's what it means... and the responses I quoted above are why it's best to get your answers from the source rather than to ask that type of question here on the forum.

Amazon does NOT own those images. They typically have been supplied by the product source and have been given permission to use them on their site. They cannot (and do not), however, give you permission to use them.

Many of the Amazon affiliates I have spoken with simply visit their local Walmart Supercenter to get their own images via smartphone, as there is a lot of product overlap between Amazon and Walmart

Sure, you can not using their images. But I've seen literally more than a thousand affiliate sites, and 99% of them using official product images (either from amazon or manufacturer's website).

How can amazon know whether you took the images from amazon or manufacturer's website?

Sure, you can get banned for that reason. But then again, you can follow all the rules to the best of your knowledge, and still get banned.

Don't worry too much about small stuff, and go make money.

This particular passage means that you can't copy an image from Amazon, host it yourself, and then use it to promote the same item on, say, Walmart.com. If you use Amazon's image, you must promote the product on Amazon's site. They aren't there to serve as an image bank.

If you get the image from the manufacturer, you can use it for whatever you want as long as it's within the manufacturer's guidelines for using their product images.

As far as one commenter's idea that Amazon can't tell where you got the image, that's not completely true. Unless you take steps to change some embedded data, they can identify their images. I'm not going to go into any detail because I don't believe in giving IP thieves tutorials on how to steal.
