Writers: what's your morning routine?

Writers: what does your morning routine look like?

Do you write in the morning? Knock out the less creative work while you're still sleepy?

I've never been a morning person, and most of my best writing was actually produced at like 3am or some other time when I should've been asleep. But I'm trying to experiment more with when my best and most creative hours are.

I normally write in the morning as I feel fresh to be creative.

Curious to hear your thoughts

Your morning has a pretty much early start at 3 am. I thought, I would read something like 8 or 9 am, in the worst case scenario 6 am.

I am a helpless night bird. I also read somewhere that the hours between 2 and 4 am are reserved for creativity. There is one more thing, though.

When you work as a freelance writer, you often have to follow and respect your client's time zone. Meaning your morning time could be someone's evening or day time, or vice versa. So, in a way, you can say that I am creative all day long.

Either way, we simply have to agree. Huge dark circles and under-eye bags may or may not be a sing of creativity.

    Cheers!

I kinda follow intuitive nudges Dan

When I was writing and self-publishing an eBook daily for 3 months in a row, I had a set routine. I'd write at 9 AM or so after meditating and taking an icy cold shower. But now I write later in the day. Feels better to me. So much of writing - for me - is sitting down to a Word doc when it feels fun, light and playful. SO obsessed with managing my energy and doing stuff when I feel relaxed, chilled, refreshed and in the flow.

    Happy Writing!

I can write at any time of the day or in the middle of the night. It is the getting started part that is a challenge sometimes. Once I start... even just a sentence or two... I am quickly zoned in and focused.

The best quality? Probably first thing in the morning.

I find I can adapt between night owl and morning person with a few lifestyle shifts.

Naturally I am a night owl. My creativity and ideas will only really start to flow in the evenings generally once I feel calm and relaxed. I found that this was an OK arrangement for my writing but it wasn't really working too well for every other aspect of my life - family life, social life and all round well being.

I was getting some decent work done but was staying up later and later as I found it hard to stop writing once I got into my flow, and as such I was getting up later and later and my life came to revolve around writing. I'm sure you'll know that as soon as your life begins to revolve around any one thing, your whole life, including that one thing begins to suffer.

This actually came to the point where I wasn't even enjoying writing so I decided I needed to change things up.

Bit by bit I forced myself to get up earlier and earlier and to bring new habits into my lifestyle until I got to the point where I was getting up at seven every morning, exercising meditating and getting a decent breakfast in before I sat down to write at nine.

That way I have the full day ahead of me and can be finished in time to have a decent, well rounded life outside writing.

This morning routine gives me a fresh enough head to really start writing with some purpose each morning, and while it doesn't quite match the easy-come creativity of night owl writing I can still get a lot of work done and I fell that the work itself doesn't suffer just the feeling I have while doing it.

I realize I must come across as a total boy scout here but I thought I'd share a method that really works for me.

If you want to try something really crazy to help you work and write better. Try headstands, they increase the flow of blood to the head, increasing the level of oxegyn to the brain and reinvigorate thebrain cells.

Give it a go if you think you're hard enough!

@ColinB so true! It's not just about being more productive but being able to live a more balanced life. I make an effort not to stay up so late that I can't at least wake up 7-9 AM.
Nowadays, I start my research in the morning. Writing more routine stuff in the afternoon and then work on my top writing projects until dinner. Do uploads in the evening and formatting.

The first thing I do in the morning, and the last thing I do at night, is check my support desk and make sure there are no customers waiting for assistance.

Awww, a good cup of coffee, some stretches and exercises then something motivational to really fuel me for the day then its time to sit down and do those money making activities right away. No email or facebook or any of that other distracting stuff till after I get my top things done for the day.

It feels good and you won't believe the time you have left at the end...

It has been my experience that creative people write whenever they desire. It really has nothing to do with the time of day unless they are "forced" into a certain schedule based on other commitments including employment, family time, etc. They write when the ideas flow and the mood is right, regardless of what the clock says.

I have learned to quickly jot down thoughts and ideas that come to me (for later writing) because I don't force myself to let my writing dictate my life. If you do this, you can truly work your way into having an Internet lifestyle business.

Isn't that part of the reason we work so hard to earn money online 24/7/365 . . . so we are not constrained to work a set schedule? It seems odd to me that people would create their own business which forces them into a rigorous deadline filled daily routine so much like being employed in the physical world!

I agree. That said, it does depend on knowing what drives you. Even some famous and hugely successful writers, such as Stephen King for example, still maintain a rigid working schedule long after they need to keep working for the money.

Personally though, I think there's more to life than productivity.
