adsense sites vs. affiliate sites

I've had some reasonable success with adsense sites, but I can't seem to make any dent at all in making money as an affiliate. :-( I think I must be creating the wrong kind of site ... what has worked for me with adsense is to find a market looking to buy a product to solve a particular problem, then writing pages about things to look for in the products, how to know when they need the products, tips on how to buy, etc. Not promoting or even mentioning any specific brand or anything, all just general information. This has gotten really tightly targeted adsense ads and a good click rate. But when I do the same with an affiliate product - and by that I mean, do the same kind of site I'd do for adsense, only replace the adsense ads with affiliate ads - it just goes nowhere.

If I was trying to promote, say, Amazon products, how would I change that approach? Should the pages literally talk about the product itself? I guess I've been looking at affiliate ads as functioning kind of like ads in print magazines; the article on the page isn't exactly about the specific product in the ad, but it's about the problem the product would solve. But I'm starting to think that's totally the wrong way to go at it - any suggestions? Your advice/experience appreciated!

There are two ways to create profitable affiliate sites

1 - Keyword Target and SEO for keywords and then setup your page to make sure the browser clicks through to that item
2 - Put up LOTs of Pages with hundreds of listings each and catch traffic from the long-tail

the fact is that you need to catch people already looking to buy, so they will be already searching for the product title. Oh.. and Amazon converts very poorly. Try eBay.

That's one really good way to go about it as you'll attract people looking for solutions to the problem, by providing content about the problem.

You could also try some more specific product content pieces with the name of the product in the title to draw in product searchers.

One thing to keep in mind with affiliate marketing is that it can take 50 - 200 clicks to make a sale just depending on how well the product/affiliate program converts. Also with Amazon it's just a 24 hour cookie so if someone thinks about it then buys tomorrow, you are out the commission.

Hope this helps, hang in there and best of luck!

I would suggest your experiment with CPA offers in stead of affiliate banners and such. Take your adsense pages and put cpa offers on with email and zip code submits. You could make more money that way, depending which cpa offer you chose.
