What is the 'ideal' amount of words on each page of a website

Hi

I've heard so many mixed responses to this and personally I aim to stick to 250 to 300 words per web page when I write content, however what is the 'norm' (if there is such a thing).

I'd love to hear what you think.

I know with infinite scroll and paralax sites it is probably different, but for websites that included SEO-rich content what would be the optimum amount of content word-wise per website page?

Thanks

    Hey there

Good question I actually follow neil patel blog quicksprout and it they have done numerous studies to

show that actually the best post length is 1500 words!!

This equals the most shares and most interaction.

This also helps content to rank higher. I have over 40 posts on my blog

and none are less than 1000 words at minumin and I enjoy very good search

    engine ranking!

Wow - this is way off what most people talk about for individual web pages - do you think there is a difference between blog posts and website content - such as services pages etc?

I'd be interested to know as 1500 words is quite a bit of text when you are viewing an individual web page (not a blog).

      Thanks for sharing

Hey personally a webpage is a blog post but with a different name

On some of my sites I make post in wordpress but on some I build pages!

Wether it's a page or post content is king and so I do this....

Wether it's a post or page you still need to do the same things on page seo, link building etc.

Of course for example a contact page will be less words than a case study post but you know what I mean?

Yep, totally. I am just blown away by the number - I have been told so many times about the 300 words being a 'good' amount. I'm going to be reading up on this for sure as it will change my offering some what.

I also write 500 word blog posts too - so this turns that theory on it's head as well.

Awesome personally there is a lot of garbage online, I have learned to research and implement the best practices, I have been online for 5 years now!

And just with my example about neil patel, do some research and you will find he is a very crediable source of information!

You can offer a good amount in 300 words but why settle for "good" when you can write a 1000 words and "be amazing"....

This mindset is what is making me money day in and day out

I must say I absolutely disagree with the first statement, but agree that content is king.
Also there is no actual magic number, based on the website and type of goals or objectives everything can change. You cannot say a blog is the same as a website, the purposes are widely different.
For SEO purposes you need around 300 words minimum to be able to seed in three phrases (not long phrases of course) but the maximum or optimum number does not exist.

    Hey Caba,

The amount of word is not most important, most important is the value of it. Though there are various studies about it. As on my blog, I've posted a study about 3 months ago. I choose a competitive keyword then search for it, then I picked 20 top guys of search ranking for that keyword and counted article words of each top site, after that I was plus all of them and divided by 20 and the result was around 1500 words.

Not only my study, an SEO expert like Brian from Backlinko dot com, he provides that an SEO article has at least 500 words. To be better he recommends that 1500 to 1900 words each article. "Longer content helps you rank better for your target keyword and brings in more long tail traffic

As someone else mentioned, posts of more than 1200 words will get more traffic than the same content as two 600-word articles.

For web-pages in general, I've read from one expert that every page should have at least 500 words.

You'll find a lot of advice saying lower numbers of words than this, but that is likely to be because some years ago, lower word numbers worked well. Things change on the internet, but a lot of the advice given doesn't keep up with the changes

it depends upon, the topic you choose to write. In my opinion, for best SEO practice minimum words per article should be greater than 300 and maximum 800-1000 words.

see here I've written two blog posts with different words range.

Best SEO WordPress plugin (800 words)

Website WordPress theme detector (300 words)

    thanks

    Hi C,

Focus on value more than anything else. Answer a specific question, solve some problem or inspire folks to live their dreams. The word count doesn't matter a ton.

BUT...........there is a difference between a web page/static page versus a blog post.

Neil is talking about blog posts. Where 1,000 to 1,500 words works nicely.

But a static page with ad copy may not need to be as beefy to knock folk's socks off.

I've heard this discussion before...for KW density, number of links, etc.

Focus on value more than anything else.
    Give that man a cigar!!

While you are all determining the "perfect" number of something, G is hard at work changing it's algo so the only determining factor is organicness and quality.

Give me short, to the point over fluff filled search engine bait, every time.

The way google measures quality has evolved. Keyword density is not as important if your content does not make much sense. Create quality content.

The easiest thing to say is it depends. Based on my experience pages with the word count between 400 and 500 words are something I dare to call the golden standard. 300 words page is too short. 1,500 is obviously too long. The SEO guys know it best, I guess. I as both writer and a reader appreciate pages of up to 500 words. You have enough material to present your idea, and I presume, enough space to throw in a few keywords. Cheers!

I've been reading even more about this and the theory that 1000 to 2000 words being 'ideal' is more and more prevalant.

I am really, really interested in this as it basically de-bunks something that I have been asking web developers for years.. I will obviously need to rework my content strategy and ensure that from now on bigger is better.

I guess I always knew this anyway.

my 87 tests, 1200 words or more works better.

But there is no need to try and work it out. Just get out there and take action and write something.

The thing is you will never work GOOGLE out and the SEO part of it. Just get something out there, and study what works better and keep doing it.

Google is too hard to work out, and I see businesses go down each day, cause they couldnt keep up with panda, duck, gorilla updates. LOL.

there is more way than one to skin a cat. These days do not bother with seo, and all that, as you will have a business making money and then the next day $0. This is where people go wrong.

Do 1200 word SEO posts. If you do that, you will get ranked. Especially with mixed LSI in title.

Great info - thanks so much.

I have certainly been enhancing my word count on average since starting this thread so I am looking forward to seeing the results and analysing this.

I see that according to Yoast SEO plugin installing on my Wordpress blog, the minimum words that good for SEO is 300, however I see that some of my posts have more efficient that others have more than 1000 words, so I think the more words is the better.

My vote is for 2500+, since if you're doing some effort, it should at least pay you well. And, these days, competition is immensely tough. In order to dominate it, you've to become extraordinary. Besides, consistency is the key. If you're consistent, you can easily dominate the search engines withing 45 days. It's my experience, so I know at least for me it works quite well.

There's an old truth I'm going to share with you...

The really successful people aren't the ones with all the right answers... they're the ones with all the right questions. You aren't asking the right questions. I have no idea what constitutes a "standard web page." Neither does anyone else... but they'll be happy to offer opinions.

Here's the only answer I can offer based on the questions you've asked.

The correct number of words is however many it takes to convey the message you want to convey as effectively as possible. Not a single word more or less. There is no such thing as copy that is either too long or too short. There is, however, plenty of copy that is too tedious and boring or too inadequate to convey an understandable message.

      See my point?

Don't worry about the number of words... worry about the power and effectiveness of your communication. It takes time and practice to develop that skill. You'll know how effective you're becoming by the results you get.

      Thanks Ike,

I honestly feel in most cases that a lot of people use 20 words where one will do in the case of writing website content and I do get a lot of requests for lean copy on pages, so this is what I deliver.

While it may not be best practice it does work and the pages get create results.

I have after this thread made a decision to increase my average length for blogs and to test that however it would be harder in practice to make website pages 2500 in length for example based on what space is available.

      I appreciate your comment.
