Hi guys,

I am always wondering how do people use Twitter for Marketing and also gain a following.

Please share any strategies and ideas as I am thinking of going into Twitter for Marketing and also engaging the people there.

Thanks in advance.

Going by your number of followers (more than me), I don't think I'll have any good points to give you

I normally don't go and bulk follow people in twitter. I rarely follow new people unless I know them. But bulk following can increase your followers rapidly (make sure you check the twitter follow limits per day).

Anyway, here's what you can do to get more followers:

    1. Tweet often
Every time you tweet, you have a better chance of becoming popular and people will follow you.

    2. Retweet
If you retweet people, you build relationship with them. In return, they will retweet your tweets. So their followers will see you and if they feel your tweets are interesting, they'll add you.

    3. Tweet about twitter trends
Lots of people check out the trends and read the tweets. If you post something interesting, they'll follow you (most probably). But don't do this too many times. Some people, who are already following you, might not really like it.

    How to be interesting?

Post humorous tweets. People don't want to follow bots. Show them your funny side.

Find interesting links and tweet. You can find them at Popurls.Com (which is an aggregator). People love to read list posts.

Tweet some quotes. Who doesn't need motivation these days? Find some really good quotes (they are all over the net). Post a quote now and then.

Best Tip: More importantly, talk to people (@). When you talk to people, they will reply with @ and every time they reply, their followers will notice you. Imagine how many people will notice your name if you talk to many tweeps.

Don't overdo any of the above. Keep everything within limits except your followers count.

    Cheers,
    Ramkarthik

I'm still trying to figure this Twitter thing out as well. I've been using social networking sites for traffic, leads, and networking for a while and I still haven't been able to wrap my head around Twitter. Personally, I just don't get how it got so freakin popular! Anyway, I'll be watching this thread hoping to see some additional tips that will help us all out.

Everytime I enter a new niche, I also create a Twitter account for that niche.

          Here's my steps:
          1. Open account
          2. Set-up Twitterfeedr or one of the other applications to send RSS feeds with my primary keywords to my twitter feed. This gives me relevant content quickly. You can use feeds from Google Alerts.
          3. Add a few personal tweets to Tweetlater acct. Spread them out over a few days, weeks, whatever.
          4. Do a search on Twitter for relevant keywords.
          5. Find and follow market leaders in the niche
          6. Check their followers for interesting people to follow
          7. Start a conversation with those people via @ replies
          8. Ask those people to follow me... It never hurts to ask.
          9. Follow #hashtags on niche related topics
          10. Contribute to the discussions
          11. Oh Yeah.. Almost forgot... Add Twitter to niche Blog and encourage people to follow and retweet in every post.
I know using a contest can also boost Twitter followers.

This strategy can take a little time in the beginning but once it gains momentum you don't have to do much.

            Hey Karen,

I noticed on your current Twitter account that you have over 5,000 tweets. Looks like you did that pretty fast. Is that what you've been able to do with Twitterfeedr or is that an undisclosed step of your process?

              Hey Daniel,

My @KarenKramer Twitter acct is my personal acct where I get to blabber on about everything and anything that peaks my twisted sense of humor. I do not use feeds on that account and only follow my known friends. I don't have a clue why all those people are following me... LOL

An example of how I set up Twitter for a niche would be @parentingmaven. I use feeds for my primary keywords, have blog posts from my parenting blogs auto posted and add relevent content. I have built nearly 3000 targeted followers that are very active in the parenting niche.

The biggest secret to Marketing on Twitter is...

              DON"T!!!

Marketing on Twitter is a disaster. Instead use Twitter as a communication and traffic tool to lead your market to your blog or your opt-in page.

When I set up Twitter for a niche, I try to add value without asking for anything in return. I give links to articles that I know my Niche followers will be interested. Only 10% of what I post leads to my own blogs.

The instant you start trying to sell on Twitter, you get unfollowed.

Yeah I agree, so it REALLY depends on how you gonna handled it. One of my friend succeeded in twitter. He use an software to gain his followers. But STILL, he implement what twitter rules. He did not use his account marketing it at all.

That's pretty interesting that you guys say that you start to get unfollowed the second you start trying to market. I kinda guessed that, so I decided I would probably just try to network using twitter. If I ever get a big enough following then i'll probably try to market a little. I was thinking that I would also try to use twitter in order to get more views on my youtube videos. Any thoughts on this? I know a few are doing this and it seems to enhance their images on video sharing sites.

Twitter is a social COMMUNITY. It is a place to get social. It is a place to meet people and show them that you are a real person. If you are truly trying to use Twitter as a marketing avenue you are going to be kicking yourself in the ass trying to get it right.

If you really want to know how the "GURU'S" use social media it has nothing to do with

        1. What they tweet
        2. How they tweet
        3. When they tweet

Twitter is an incredible place to focus your efforts on viral marketing. It is a conversational piece that if you are using all the right pieces, you can use twitter as a platform to skyrocket all the other pieces of your marketing.

What I mean. As you start to build your list or gain a piece of notoriety in your niche....you can use your followers followers to build your business for you. It is the essence of viral marketing.

        Step 1. Get a blog
Step 2. Post VERY valuable content on your blog
Step 3 Tweet your blog post
Step 4. Get your followers to Tweet your blog
Step 5 Get your followers followers to tweet your blog.

This is the aspect of viral marketing and content syndication that you must understand to get the most out of twitter.

As the followers of your followers are tweeting your blog, more and more people will become interested in your and visit your profile. When they Do.....BAM...there is the link to your capture page.

When they see that you are being promoted by xx amount of people everyday, they will see you as a person of worth and therefore they will want to follow and work with you.

It is the basis of attraction marketing in the social media world.

I've found that Tweeting often and something of value always works. I've also worked on asking a question. Sometimes you'll get lucky and be "Re Tweeted" which is basically forwarding what you said to others.

Also, on Friday, though it seems somewhat ridiculous, take part in the "Follow Friday". This is basically where you name a few of the people you follow and ask others to follow them. Usually they will return the favor thereby putting your name out there to all of their followers.

I also put a spin on that and write "Why" someone should follow the personal I am recommending. It's more likely that they'll retweet it that way.

Before you start, it is recommended to do a keyword research. They use the keyword so that you are in the top rank when people search using google.

    Tips:
Use the search tool in twitter to search for question like "where to buy..", "where can i find...", "where can i buy...".

These people are potential buyers. From there you create a digital product to sell to them. Instant money...

You also can help people to look for their needs to gain trust so that they will follow you.

Twitter users tend to follow back. So you might consider to follow people with same interest and hope them to follow you back to exchange info.
