Quality vs. quantity - getting the right mix of clients

Its been a struggle to get the mix right, and to be honest I dont always get it right but I am starting to think that quality over quantity is the way to go when it comes to clients.

When I started working for myself, it was all about getting as much work as possible, from as many people as possible without much regard for quality or ensuring the right fit.

Now I realise it means nothing to have a phone full of business clients but really the quality over quantity rule stands out to be true.

When I have had heaps of small projects I have these issues:

- Not enough time in the day to get things done
- Not ever able to completely ensure all tasks are done and I am thinking ahead of clients to ensure all their needs are taken care of any reporting and planning is in place
- Issues with project management

There were plenty of other issues but you get the picture.

When I focus on just a smaller client base the following seems to happen:

- I get more productive
- I am less scattered and dont need to move from project to project
- The client gets more expertise from me as I am focusing on a smaller number of tasks, so I am more likely to be able to dedicate more time to each project

The trade off is that with a smaller client or project base if one client drops off or moves on there is a larger hole to fill, however it is a risk I am willing to take in my quest to get a smoother flow in my business.

I read an article recently in Entrepreneur that was all about embracing the quality aspect in business, and it outlined a few areas to focus on to do better rather than doing more:

- Supercharge sales with higher quality leads
- ensure all products/services are flawless
- Dont take SEO shortcuts
- Nurture relationships
- Go with targeting marketing campaigns
- Be wary of customer service automation
- Build quality relationships on social media organically
