Are the new marketers similar to Swiss army knives?

In the last few years a lot of changes happened in the marketing field and the work teams dedicated to it, many of those changes are quite structural and had a direct impact on the way teams work and the profiles each teams needs to have if they want to be sucessful. Things out there are a lot more complex than they used to be, and teams need to be more complex too if they want to survive.

A few years ago, in every marketing team, things were quite separated, everyone knew the tasks they perform and how to perform them, Mad Men is a great example on how marketing teams work a few decades ago. Jobs and tasks were completely separated, and once they were defined, there was little space for changes.

Marketing agencies worked just fine with this scheme, until a wild monster appeared and changed everything: the internet.

Internet and its complex universe changed everything, millennials also have a big role in this, their working habits, their expectation to change their work every time and stuff, changed the dynamics of marketing teams, now, a good team need multitasking members, with different set of skills and the capacity of working in several projects at the same time.

All the marketing agencies are including this new profiles in their searches every time they need to bring new people, they want complex people, with the capacity of learning new things and working in fields they dont necessarily have experience.

This new work models bring a lot of benefits to workers, they allow them to work at the positions they like, and specialize in these positions, rather than working at places where there is no room for improvement and learning new skills.

But all of these also come with some disadvantages, job requirements can be very hard (there is a lot of memes out there mocking about this), and they push people to be continuously learning and improving, sometimes asking more than they can deliver.

Sometimes companies gets too hard to their worker, they asked them more than they should, and the payment is not always up to the requirements.

Another problem comes from the team itself, the wide variety of skills a person can have, and the non clear separation between positions can create a complex working environment, where fights and disputes will be a common thing between employees.

Personally, Im really being affected by this trends, I applied for three different agencies in the last month, and their requirements were extremely different from one another, while one asked for a SEO guy with design skills, the other wanted a Social Media guy who is also specialized at Ecommerce solutions, being up to those challenges is not an easy thing.

Thats why the tittle of this thread is "Are the new marketers similar to Swiss army knives?", because thats why I think the market is expecting from us, they want us to be Swiss army knives.

What do you think of all these? doesnt it gets frustrating sometimes?

I think it's natural for things to change. I don't find this frustrating - New things inspire me to keep on trying to get what I want. It also opens up new opportunities. More challenges with equally more rewards motivate me to always do my best and focus on the prize ...

Ideally, I believe technology should be able to make things significantly quicker, easier, simpler and less resource-extensive for us to do; and

If that's the case, then shouldn't we also adapt and use it well to do more things and get better results?

I'd get really clear on what you want V, as far as a skill or niche you wish to pursue. Then, apply for jobs looking for that specific skill. Then you're more of a single purpose hunting knife versus the multi purpose Swiss army knife Keep your head up!
