PayPal Donation Buttons

I am in the process of creating a catalog of downloadable content for my website. I am wondering if anyone has personal experience with paid downloads vs. free downloads with a donation button?

I recently came across a free stock photo website (pixabay.com). The thing that I really like about the website is that when you download a photo, a PayPal button appears that simply says 'Coffee'. I thought this was pretty clever way to ask for donations. I have definitely bought a few cups of coffee for people contributing to the website.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or best practices on downloadable content?

    I have never worked with donation buttons, but I think it would really depend on the downloadable content that you are creating. It would probably be best to do some A/B testing with a couple different landing pages and payment options.

    I think you'd need a lot of traffic for a Paypal donation button to bring in any money. Unless you're a non-profit people aren't likely to part with their money unless they absolutely have to. Even non-profits have to constantly solicit donation to stay above water.

    I agree with Brad, unless you have a lot of traffic then you won't bring in much money from a donation button

    Donations don't work unless you are a charity. People want stuff for free, asking for a donation just gets ignored. The world is full of freebie seekers. Meke 'em pay or give it away. Forget the donation button.

      Spot on.

      When was the last time you made a donation after downloading or reading something online? Donations rarely work, unless as someone mentioned earlier, if it's for charity.

      Otherwise, just price whatever you are offering competitively and get the traffic!
