What do you think of Moz's decision to remove "thin comments"?

Hey Warriors,

I'm not sure if you've seen Rand's tweet today about Moz's tougher stance on "thin comments":

What do you think of this decision?

Have you made a similar move for your blog?

If so, what has been the result?

Cheers

This is interesting. I think Moz is doing the removal thing because they want their website to have meaningful feedback and for things to be added to the discussion that enhance it or make it better.

There are a lot of websites and forums that don't really moderate comments and this too is understandable but at the same time there comes a boiling point where crazy responses or lazy responses turn a site into nothing more than a junkyard.

I think Rand is trying to make the site classier. The same can be said for people posting basically the same comment or posts that were previously written about within a certain time frame.

Moderating can be tricky. One thing I'd be concerned about is taking away people's voices. But if the comments are sloppy and the owners feel like it's hurting their brand they're going to have to step in and do something about it. That's why comments are deleted on some forums. That's also why some people get banned. Again, I get it. I can see if you have a bunch of similar comments and nothing new that does anything for anyone. But that kind of censorship... I don't know.

I guess this is just an image deal.

This has nothing to do with making the place classier. They're looking to remove spammers."Thanks great post" etc type comments don't help anyone.

On a large site like Moz pointless comments take up space, force people to scroll through tons of dross to find the interesting, thoughtful notes left by genuine commenters.

It's too easy with auto-commenting software to spam your way onto a bazillion blogs in the deperate hope that you'll get some decent link juice back to your site.

I'm surprised the mods here don't do the same. Mind you if they did most threads would lose 80% of their comments...
