Whois Privacy Protection

Under Gandi's Private Domain Registration, it says that all personal contact information can be hidden with the exception of your name due to ICANN rules regarding ownership (see below). I have an email out to Gandi to get clarification, but wanted to see if anyone here can shed some light.

Your first and last name will not (usually) be hidden in the Whois, unless it is hidden by the corresponding Registry's policy. Due to current ICANN rules, this is very important, as it assures that you maintain all the owner rights to the domain (as well as the responsibilities.)

Thanks Caroline Lee. So does that mean you lose ownership if your name is not publicly visible in the Whois database?

    * Just remember to turn auto-renew on because if not, your site could be permanently indexed under your real name if a web crawl happens to hit it with privacy protection turned off.

I'm not familiar with Gandi but generally, your first and last name along with your address, phone number and email address are hidden.
