Feeling IM burn out? How to avoid majoring in the minors

I have a habit of majoring in the minors - I focus on things that arent billable or arent bringing in cash - whether it be reading articles, working about small things that wont make a tremendous difference over all - you get my drift.

Sometimes I get to the end of the day and I feel like although I have been going at full speed I am not accomplishing too much.

I want to have more to show for the work I am putting in and distraction can hinder my output as can majoring in minor things that don;t have a massive impact on the over all marketing work I am trying to achieve.

In an effort to not just keep busy but productive, Ive been working on a couple of areas to use my time a little better.

Heres what I have been working on - it might be helpful for you too.

Schedule priorities

These can be weekly, monthly, yearly and daily - block out these chunks of time as important events that can not be moved.

Clarify what you want to commit to

Often while we are punching away at work we miss important things that we want to accomplish - whether it is fitness, health, finances, business or family, clarify what it is that you want to commit to and work out the balance you need to achieve this.

Engage a VA or someone to help

This one is probably going to save your sanity. What ever it is that youre really struggling with is probably going to be fairly minor, whether it is admin, research, web scraping, list building whatever, you can outsource this task to someone for a few bucks an hour and save you majoring in the minors.

Be prepared to compromise

Its impossible to please everyone and sometimes you wont be able to do two things at the one time. So be prepared to focus on the things that are great and leave the things that are just so so, this way you will be able to focus on big picture tasks rather than smaller ones.

Have realistic expectations

Youre your own worst critic and sometimes we are personally responsible for our own burnout due to the fact that we put everyone else needs ahead of ours. Set realistic expectations and be prepared to move these about when needed.

Feel free to share what youre working on to focus on big picture stuff rather than the minors in your IM work and life.
