Ideally mobile friendly as well, I'm trying to create a group that will attract certain type of people. Member should be able to interact as well as post on the blog as well.

There is no real best. Many people use custom themes. Just start by picking a color scheme and search for themes that would fit.

Most themes are mobile friendly, ability to post by visitors isn't special either.
Just think about the design you want your site to have and find a theme supporting that idea.

You might check out these Buddypress Themes from ThemeForest. You have to buy them but I often get themes from them and am very happy with the outcomes.

I'm currently using Bloggy on WordPress. Very simple, user friendly, and works great on mobile devices.
