Learn from MY MISTAKES

There are so many people posting that they don't know where to start in internet marketing, so I wanted to share some of the troubles I ran into early on and explain how I would address those things looking back. When I first began, I had access to an SEO course that explained how to set up a website in Wordpress and start doing SEO for it, and that you could even start to get sales using this method and I knew factually that people were succeeding. I tried to implement that method and I totally failed. Here are the biggest mistakes I made when I was starting out:

1. Expecting fast results - My parents divorced one summer and I was just on the cusp of moving to a new city with my girlfriend. I gave myself just four months to start generating revenue through the five websites I was building. Wow, was that ever a bad idea. With no capital to invest and only relying on my own work, things moved very slowly. I was also in the middle of learning the system so I had to watch videos, take notes, create my own processes and refine what I was doing. I couldn't outsource or automate anything, it was all my own work and the time frame was way too short, especially given that...

2. I didn't work enough hours - Don't get me wrong, most people get into IM because they want to end up working far fewer hours per week than a normal job and still rake in the dollars. I did too, but the reality is that to be successful in any business venture, you'll have to put the time in one way or another. I wanted to allocate just a few hours a day but I could have gotten way further in the process if I moved faster in the earlier stages.

3. Dividing my attention - I was building several websites, testing other methods, reading forums for other ideas, and ultimately not placing my attention where it needed to be. I was also dealing with other distractions, but the fact is that anything that takes you away from the immediate task is a problem. A friend of mine was running two businesses, a side hustle and going to school, and ultimately failed at all of those things. When he dusted himself off, he picked one of the businesses to focus on and now does $xxx, xxx annual revenue.

These are the first 3 tips I can offer - don't expect immediate results, put the time in that's required to get things moving, and focus on one thing at a time until you either make it a success or fail at it.

    Hi,
Thanks for your valuable experiences. I think another important reason why people get mistake is lack of preparation. Abraham Lincoln said that "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe."
    Cheers.

I've made all of these mistakes too. Being lazy, not working hard, and dividing attention all over the place is a great way to really get nowhere.

Focus. Move forward. Work hard. Refine. Be relentless with your action not your talk. Get er done!

Thanks for sharing your experience. There is a lot of value there.

Most of what it takes to succeed in IM is what goes on between your ears. The correct mindset.

Most can learn how to make a blog or web site. But if you spread yourself too thin (as you mentioned) your results will be minimal.

I think some have the misconception that IM is somehow "easier" because it's online. It still needs to be treated as a business.

Paralysis by analysis is another huge one. Getting ready to get ready.

"I just need to read one more blog post then I'll start." That used to be me.

It's better to take action even if it's not perfect than doing nothing but reading and watching tutorials.

You'll learn a lot more by doing. There comes a time when school is out!

One piece of advice I can give to people that are suffering from action paralysis in the same way that I was is to actually go out and get a job. Everybody who works for somebody else is in what I would call the time-selling business. You follow a business model where you sell an hour of your time for a specific rate and you give up ownership of your own life in exchange for some money.

Internet marketing is a way to get out of the time selling business, but in order to do that you need some money to start out with and if you're under pressure to make money from your internet marketing business right from the beginning you're going to be in a bad spot when it comes to execution. You have to get comfortable with the fact that you're going to fail and you're going to waste some of your effort, but those things are going to affect you a lot less if you know that bread is coming to your table regardless.

One thing that people struggle with is that they are scared to fail, and that's because the education system teaches us that failure is always a bad thing, but ultimately we need to accept that failure doesn't exist in the real world. You do something, you get a result, and then you modify your behaviour to change the result until you get what you want. That's all!

I totally agree about expecting fast results. A lot of beginners start, do something very minimal, and expect to start making money right away. It takes time and a lot of people give up too soon.

Interesting Tova. I made errors with the first 2 in the opposite direction LOL.

I expected to work like a dawg for years AND I worked too much When I released expectations a bit, did more mindset work, and worked less, and played more, things came together for me with greater ease.
