Is Wordpress The Way To Go?

Hi everyone,

I want to start a blog, but not sure which one to use, I read a lot on wp. Is it pretty easy to get started?

Also, blogspot seems to be pretty good but I would like to get some feedback as to which way to go. Or does it matter.

I use cpanel so I guess it would be pretty easy to set up.

Thanks in advance!

Steven

Yes Wordpress is the best and is very easy to understand. It is best if you can host Wordpress on your own domain rather than using the free one at wordpress.com. You have a lot more flexability.

Yes, wordpress is pretty easy to get started, there are many themes & plugins you can use with WP to make your blog/site look unique.. I highly recommend that you start with WP.. You can easily set up WP blog using Cpanel Fantastico

    I agree,

Wordpress will give you the ablitiy to spend more time on the content and promotion of the site because it will be easy to manage and create.

Wordpress gets my vote, tried other platforms, but always reverted back to Wordpress. Incredibly flexible, with a ton of themes and plugins.

You'll find it really easy to setup, especially with cpanel.

I guess it depends on your technical level and your learning ability.

If you just want to start blogging, blogspot makes it extremely easy. Blogs hosted there tend to get indexed qucikly, and there is a fair bit of customization you can do to set your blog apart from the others. It is essentially a hosted web application, so there is no maintenance for you to perform. However, the URL doesn't look professional. If you're blogging for fun this isn't a big deal, but if you're doing it for marketing purposes you will want things to look professional as possible.

There's 2 ways you could go with Wordpress - a hosted version at wordpress.com or installing wordpress on your own hosting account. As with blogspot, the main advantage of the hosted version is zero maintenance. However, you can use your own domain, but there's less flexibility in customization. Installing it on your own hosting account gives you ultimate control over the software - but you will need to make sure to keep things up to date to avoid any security issues. You can install plugins, themes, widgets, etc. at your choosing, modify them or develop your own - great if you're a geek or tinkerer at heart. That is not to say installing or maintaining wordpress on your hosting account is difficult. Installing or upgrading any plugins, widgets or wordpress itself can easily be done in a couple clicks in the admin interface.

Personally, I like using my own installation of Wordpress as my main site. However, I do maintain some blogspot blogs in a couple niches in order to get some cheap backlinks to any projects that I may be working on.

I use both blogger and wordpress for blogs, and I have started using wordpress *exclusively* instead of dreamweaver for my websites.

If you just need a quick and dirty and very easy to set up blog - just a blog - blogger is super user friendly, easy to set up, easy widgets and you can put an email capture in their widget whereas wordpress.com blogs you cannot, and to me that is a vital difference.

If you plan to do a lot of websites in the future, wordpress as a CMS is the way to go - I'll likely never do another HTML DreamWeaver website (or even an Xsite generated site) ever again unless I just need a simple one to three page site quick and dirty and don't care about pinging and such.

So if its JUST a blog, blogger MIGHT be a better choice because I can put Aweber code in there, but I've also noticed that wordpress blogs seem to rank a little higher too.

      Hope that helps!

      Best,
      David

Well, it looks like I'll give wp a go! Since I can install wp from my cpanel on my server does that mean It will be on my server or will it be hosted from the wordpress site?

I appreciate this forum & you people!

        Thanks

Yes, if you install from your own cPanel it will be on your server, not on WordPress.com

Guys and Gals, Please do not use the fantastico installer to install wordpress, it is the absolute worst thing you can do for your business.

Take the extra 15 min to do the install on your own, you will really appreciate the difference both in terms of stability and in terms of the ability to establish your wordpress website.

I use wordpress for most of my websites, I have found it to be reliable and profitable, it may not fit for every single need, but it is a good place to start when you are just getting started.

I believe in what I am doing so much so that I am giving away my software for building wordpress websites.

Why? Because I would rather you learn how to install wordpress the right way than to use fantastico and end up abandoning your marketing efforts as a lost cause, at the very least you can flip websites if you do not want to run a site long term, but take it from someone who makes money running websites, you cannot go wrong with wordpress, you will never find a better price.

This is all good...but something you will want to realize...

If you use WordPress.com (rather than hosting WordPress on your own server) they will NOT let you put anything commercial on the blog. No affiliate links, etc. If that is part of your plan then you will want to go with either a self-hosted WordPress install or a blogger blog.

If you're not ready to pay for hosting, but want to monetize a blog, blogger is the way to go (the free version of wp doesn't allow for this). If you do have a host, wordpress is great, but there is a learning curve. To help you get started, much of the how-to's about wordpress can be found on Youtube. I use wordpress for most of my sites.

  • you are CRAZY to build an affiliate business on wordpress.

it has a security fix almost every 30 days.

and unless you always are upgrading every single install of wordpress you've ever installed you will always be vulnerable to some 10 year old hacker in a third world country putting the lights out on your business almost overnight.

I think security fixes are a good thing? I might be worried if they DIDN'T have security upgrades.

      Naturally, always upgrade.

security fixes are good because they fix their broken software. ;( Which they will find is still broken in another few weeks. And this happens month after month, year after year.

You should try using something like typepad.com that has an almost 0% hacking ratio over YEARS instead of wordpress imho. unless your business is just a hobby, stear clear of WP.

pfft. WordPress.com doesn't have hacking problems either.

And let's be real. The software isn't broken. There's no such thing as secure software. If there's software, there are hackers working at cracking it and unfortunately a lot of them are pretty smart.

You're giving bad advice. ( and it's "steer", not "stear" )

Wordpress works well. I have been using it for years now. All upgrades aren't bug fixes. Some are improvements. Don't pay for a blogging platform. You never get the flexibility you want.
Wordpress notifies you when the updates are available and they can be done with a click of a button. And if you have backups of the database sent to your email, there is a plugin for that, your data is safe.
I have heard this argument about open source software since I started on the internet and have been using various open source web applications for about 10 years now with no complaints.

I was actually wondering if anyone uses Wordpress for just websites (not blogs). It sounds like because of the regular security updates though, it isn't an ideal platform for set-it-and-forget-it-type sites. Would this be a fairly accurate statement?
