Digital Marketing in Rural Area, is it effective?

everybody!

Before I start off I'm new here, just recently joined, and I'm excited to be around like minded people!

I recently Just moved from Florida to Illinois. Everyone know places such as Florida, New York, California, Chicago, people there are actively on their phone and social media. I live in a rural area with a decent amount of city like traits. Now I recently joined college and I've noticed here that the people are more active on Facebook and Instagram than Snapchat. Back in Florida, Snapchat is probably the most popular app there.

What I'm trying to ask is can digital marketing be effective in Rural area, and if how so? For target market let's make the age 18-35. I only see through social media to be honest.

    We'll with online marketing, you can advertise to anyone with an internet connection... not just the people who live near you. So, I guess the answer to your question is that it doesn't matter where you live.

    People form both rural and urban areas have some kind of online presence these days, so digital marketing is surely going to be effective. You just need to figure where your target market is hanging out online. If a social platform is more popular in a particular area, then advertise there in order to reach a bigger audience.

    So I read through all your guys replies. Thanks you all for your comment, very much appreciated. What it seems like to me is that I just need to find where they are spending their time digitally. It was easier back in FL because I was already integrated with that community.

    It's really cool by the way that I get to be part of this community. Hope to learn a lot from you all!

    Your posts makes it sound like you think that
    people outside of big cities don't go on the internet
    (Which is crazy)

    I think that people in rural areas actually spend a
    lot more time online. (Especially older people.)

      I was having doubts that people in rural area don't have a strong digital presence as people from urban area or cities. After hearing your guys thoughts and comments, I find myself wrong. Now it's a matter of finding where they spend their time.

    Why are you Geo targeting rural Illinois?

      Since I'm part of it now, I'd thought it be easier to start with my local area. It'll be easier for me to market to the people around me first and then spread out.

    If you want to market locally you should check out Facebook groups. Most towns, even small ones, have groups where you can post about your local business at no charge.

    I agree with Courage who posted above. I think people in rural areas spend even more time online than city dwellers.

    Well, digital marketing is so versatile. You can always find ways to connect to your target audience.

    I feel like Social Media Marketing is really the way to go in rural areas.

    It depends on the mobile and internet penetration, some rural areas doesnt have good connections (or dont have connections at all), which means you wont get any audience from there.

    But other rural areas have a big penetration of internet, making the people from there a great audience if you know how to segment of them. The infrastructure might be weak, but people some times buy satellite connections or stuff like that for having internet.

    I worked for a client once that sold products in Australia rural areas, it was quite a challenge, because it was very difficult to segment them geographical (as rural areas are commonly larger in size than bigger cities, but with least people on them), I contacted Facebook Audience Insight teams and they helped me building a solid segmentation, they actually gave me access to some segmentation lists they have for free, it was great and very helpful.


    If you are targeting people from the US, use Audience Insight, they will help.
