Default To Autoplay (video) or not to Autoplay?

Here's the thing,

Lots of people have landing pages that autoplay a video, and lots of people have landing pages where the video does not autoplay. Is this something I should be split-testing according to the desires of my niche? I have a specific site that I am finishing up for a client and I can't decide if the video should autoplay or if it shouldn't play until the website visitor clicks on the video. The video of course, is at the very top middle of the web page. What are your thoughts and experiences for different niches? Anybody done some actually split testing on this concept? Thanks!

People are often doing other things...or should be doing other things, like working. Best to leave it off, from my experience.

I like to not autoplay but to coax the visitor to press play.

Split testing is the final answer...

My personal preferences: I don't like websites that have autoplay videos as soon as you visit the page. The audio is intrusive, and it makes me click the close X to get rid of something that starts shouting at me, when I wasn't expecting it.

That is definatly a situation where it all comes down to testing. The slighest variable in the video may make the difference between opt-in and opt-out.

You never know what the target audience are going to want to see.

Also, it really depends on if the video really brings the value of the page up , or it brings it down.

Sometimes the reader does not need to see a video, the copy can be persuasive enough to go ahead and put in their information.

Thanks for the input guys, I just know that Mike Filsaime usually has his videos autoplay, but at the same time most people know of Mike Filsaime so that may be why he gets away with it. I think since people visiting this page are coming from a PPC ad that i'll leave the autoplay off this time. If it was coming from email traffic or from social media traffic I might do the autoplay, but with a "cold" ppc ad I think you guys are right about bugging people.

Split test.

Personally, I hate it, but not enough to leave the site. I'll just stop if from
playing.

If they disable the feature, THEN I leave the site.

I don't like being forced to listen to something and want to at least be given
the option to turn the darn thing off.
