Worst client excuse to get discounts

Don't you guys hate when clients tell you to give them a discount because this is just their "first" project but have many many more coming when in reality you perfectly know that is the only project they have in mind?

Want to know if this happened to you...

When I hear that, I say: Excellent. You pay now for all your five projects and I give you 50% off on the fifth one.

I have had it happen quite a few times. I simply say, that is my fee. If you place a bulk order (10+), I will offer a discount. But I never reduce a 1st job because a client claims to have more work.

The same applies if I am asked to write a sample of their choosing and they won't pay for it. While I do need more work, I don't budge when it comes to stuff like that.

Worst excuse I heard was that they were have already had 5-6 offers and all were cheaper. In reality, if the quality of the work is going to be the same, no customer would bother giving that kind of information. They would just go and take one of the cheaper offers.

There's this popular joke. Like a job interview. A candidate asks for a salary. He gets an answer like later we will have much more to offer. Then this candidate replies, I will come back later. When your business negotiations start with the problem about the price discount, then this is the right time to question your whole situation. Maybe, that's a warning sign to get away. Sometimes, it's better to make the right preventive move than to deal with the consequences later. Those clients who care about the price first will always treat it as the priority. So, allow them to get what they deserve for their price. Cheers!

Yeah I know this as well and its quite ridiculous.

But my personal all-time favorite is "Hey, I'm not sure whether the consulting will help me and whether I can afford it right now. Would you be open for a complete free consulting and as soon as I see results and profits I give you a commission?"

    Nothing more hilarious than that

As a long term member known for SEO I get that one sometimes but not as much as the please rank my site for nothing but commission pitch. I find that one far more annoying. It says - I am broke AND I am unrealistic

For sure that would be extremely annoying Mike.

    Exactly.

I say "that is my fee" - if they push it I tell them I'll consider a discount on their 4th project. They give up at that point.

To answer the OP - No, I don't hate it. The client is hoping to negotiate and there's nothing wrong with trying. It will work with some freelance providers.

Of course clients care about price - believing they don't is foolish. Why would you 'get away' over something so minor? Quote your price and stand by it - and do it without all the emotional drama some freelancers here seem to have.

Hello Kay, i get your point that clients want to negotiate and is 100% legit and i agree and has to be done.Negotiations are part of the business. But the policy i appreciate the most is honesty. If the client for example tells me "hey, this is a really important project for me but i have financial problems right now, i would appreciate it much more instead of him saying that he has many more projects on the way just to get me exited. In the first case im the kind of guy that would give the client the discount, but really can't stand the "more projects on the way" excuse.

Whenever a prospective client tells me that they can get it "cheaper, elsewhere," I just ask them why they're standing here, talking to me? I invite them to take advantage of that cheaper offer.

    They'll be back.
