How to test the waters...

Okay guys, I'm getting ready to launch a product and I was all set to start making it when I posted a topic about what process I should be following and it turns out that I have it all wrong. Unilaterally, you all advised that instead of creating the product and then testing it in front of my target audience, I should be testing the market before actually creating the product to be sure that I'm not pissing my time away.

This makes sense because I definitely don't want to build something that nobody needs. That being said, it's a bit more of a challenge to see how people react to your work if you don't have any people around to do the reacting, so it seems like I should be looking to set up some kind of paid traffic somewhere to figure out if I'm able to convert it before investing in creating a product.

To be honest this has me kind of confused. I'm familiar with agile development and letting the customer basically play a huge role in the actual product development phase of projects. What this does is ensures that there is a target market and a buyer for the end product so that when you get to the end of the building process, you actually have revenue immediately. I thought of a few potential ways to test the market for my product and was hoping to get some feedback.

1. Individually contact people in my target market that have the problem I'm trying to solve and ask if they would buy my product. If not, what features can I add that would make them want to buy it? Where would they see the most value? I'm planning an informational product based on some of my own experience, so I would need to understand what these people are actually looking for and hopefully find that they would buy the product I want to design, or something similar.

2. Create a landing page promoting my product which doesn't exist yet, or an e-mail collection lander and see how well it converts based on my value propositions. For example, I could offer a short report by e-mail with similar value propositions as my product and figure out how to convert on it effectively before taking the next step and building a higher value product to sell to my list.

Please anyone, let me know what next steps you would recommend in validating my idea before I go crazy with it and really start to build and promote it to my target market.

You've outlined some great ideas of how to reach out to your potential customers.

Any of the above ideas would work, and you'd get the desired feedback quickly.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I feel that your question is more about what to offer and how to do it than methods of driving traffic and promotion, which are honestly quite simple to learn.

You could start by narrowing down what kind of software you'd like to create, and most importantly, how it would be superior to the software that's already on the market. What the maket is buying already is the most direct route to making money. You could design something completely unique, but that comes with its own set of risks, and with no way of knowing if someone is actually interested in buying your product.

I would keep it very simple, and focus on one key advantage that your software can do better than what's on the market, and ensure it's something that people are willing to pay for. It seems obvious, but if your product is simply better than what's on the market then acquiring users won't the issue.
