I Have A Dilemma, need suggestions

I have a dilemma!

I want to start a Internet Marketing blog but I am not sure what domain extension to use.

There is the option to use a .co.za (South African) domain name but I think this might narrow me down and affect my targeting, am I right in assuming this?

The blog will be all about Internet Marketing and my experiences with tips and advice how to make money online like I do.

I will use affiliate links and promoting of certain products to make some money from it, but I don't know if I should use a .com or maybe a .net so as to not lose out on international clients.

So the question is, .co.za or another extension such as .net or .com? And why?

Anyone's input will be appreciated.

Thank you

Go for .com, don't consider the more targeted extensions if you plan on building a site which you want people outside of SA to see and visit.

With any site I always look for .com first, then .net IF it has my chosen keyword phrase in and then if neither .net or .com are available I will look at adding an extra word onto my domain for a .com ext.

i second bwj here... IMO the most important thing still is content.. esp if u think google... and yes .com is the best.. for most commercial websites... you will lose some visitors if you dont go for .com

    Thank you everyone,

Now by everyone saying .com another problem has risen.

Any suggestions for a .com domain? I know that there was a thread that recommended domains especially if your name is taken but I cannot find it?

    Anyone got any suggestions?

You've picked a very competitive niche and it will be difficult to find a good .com, but not impossible. Take your time and find one that you can live with. I would search .com and .net. Either one is good. .org in my opinion wouldn't be good for this niche and .infos are used by so many spammers that I'd stear clear of them.

There are plenty of Internet marketing .com names available. I just registered (what I think is) a good one last week. No hyphens either.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

    Thanks for the domain advice,

Should I use my name in the domain or make it something general?

    Thanks everyone,

The problem is I am still struggling with a decent .com name.

I did buy a great South African one, but I will not be using that anymore as a .com was more recommended.

Please help suggest a few .coms, any tips anything will help.

It depends on what name you actually wanted to register as to what I would suggest but have you tried YourDomainBLOG.com? You don't want your domain to be greater than 3 words (preferably 2) but this isn't always possible.

I know that there is some disagreement about this, but if you cannot find the .com you like, try it with dashes.

SEO expert Dave Kelly claims that there is no SEO difference between a domain with dashes and one with none. I would pick a .com with dashes over a .info or .org any day. Not sure about .net, but people still expect .com domains.

        My two cents worth.

I think dashes are fine with two word domains but any greater than that and it's a usability issue in my opinion.

I agree with you KaylaB, I would pick a .com with dashes over any other domain name. Having said that, from an SEO perspective, I will buy a .net IF for example I was targeting a two word phrase and the .net had just that phrase and nothing else. I would also buy the slightly longer .com as well and add it as a parked domain.

          Thanks for your input.

I like your blog, I am planning to start something like that but the problem is I want to brand it and create a name using the domain, and with hyphens that might be a little harder than it already will be.

I will keep that in mind as I am searching and searching for a decent .com which is getting more difficult by the day.

dot com domains are usually better to register but if you are starting an internet marketing blog it might be hard to find a dot com for the keywords you want. If you are skilled at SEO or if ranking in the search engines is not your priority, then you could use a dot net or dot org. However, if you are looking to use your internet marketing blog as a portfolio, dot com domains are the most professional. I generally like to stick to dot com domains my personal portfolio domain is a dot com and I am glad it is like that.

Whenever you're getting a domain name, first priority goes to .com domains. Its kinda like why are you using google as your primary search engine. They both are the tops within their industry. Go for .com all the way!

    Yes, Oscar!
As it was noted by George Wright above, " You are only limited by your imagination".
Do you really want to put some restrictions on who you are going to converse with?
Well, other than language, of course.
The extension ".co.za" is probably offered by a South African company: just like .uk -Brittish, .it - Italian, .ru - Russian, etc.
How big is the factor that you live in South Africa? Are the products offered on your site to be shipped physically, or downloadable?
My opinion - go for the .com
    Good luck!

As you can see by George Wrights post above there are still lots of good .com domain names available... just take your time and be creative. Also, I know what you mean about not liking oscarsinternetbusiness.com, but remember craigslist was just a simple list and the owners name and look at it now.

just sharing, but actually, there is no limit to it.

You remember Bill Rancic, the Donald Trump, apprentice winner, his website was cigarsaroundtheworld.com

And i heard he made 500K peryear with that, before he was on apprentice. That is a long domain.

    Good luck Oscar.
