At What Point Do You Switch To Dedicated Servers or VPS?

Hello my good community...

I was wondering if some of you could shed some light, maybe some guidelines as to when one should switch their hosting to VPS or dedicated servers. I have several blogs with HostMonster, and I've hosted with them for a while. I have no complaints. But I am worried about CPU limits.

My concern is that I plan on installing Wordpress MU and a Dolphin site.

I don't expect a mad rush of traffic right away. And i don't want to pay for more hosting than I need to in the beginning.

So is there a way to measure or estimate things and a general guideline as to when to upgrade from a shared hosting account to dedicated or VPS?

  • My sites have hit CPU limits during high-traffic and it sucks because that's when you'll be making most of your money.

Upgrade your hosting when you start hitting the limits. But program your sites so that heavy-duty plugins get throttled off when traffic is high so that you can squeeze every dime out of the heavy traffic before you're forced to upgrade.

    Hi,

You have hit the big 2 for reasons to switch, diskspace and bandwidth. If the sites are crucial to what you do, then you don't want to have issues with either one.

The big thing with making the switch is you have more flexibility because you have more control. If you decide to make the switch, consider price to a certain extent, but more so service and support.

Test the support by firing off some questions to see response times. Get recommendations form others here. Compare apples to apples for what is offered/price and see if you need to get a self-managed (you take care of) or managed service (probably best).

    Just a starting point.

    Thanks,

    John

You can get a reseller server at HostGator for $24.95 per month and host all of the sites you want to on it for the same price. That's what I do.

Regardless of how many sites you put on it - your price is still $24.95 per month.

You can also sell hosting to other people and put them on it and let them pay you to host on your server. If you host a few other people on the server - they will pay you more than you pay HostGator for it and it will be like you have a free server that you make money with.

    Thanks for the responses.

BurgerBoy, regarding reseller accounts...Are they setup with significantly more CPU than a regular shared hosting account?

Space and bandwidth aren't the issues so much as CPU overload is. I can host unlimited sites on my HM shared account too. But the CPU limits will eventually hold me back.

    Hi,

CPU limits will be more restricted on reseller accounts than on a VPS or dedi. I think the Dolphin script can be a resource hog, so you may want to look at what you started with.

Possibly contact the hosting company and ask them.

    Thanks,

    John

No. Reseller account is also same like shared hosting, goes with sharing of CPU resources.

VPS with 512 RAM will do for your website with your traffic as you are saying you are more concerned about memory and speed rather than disk space. So try and get VPS with atleast 512 MB memory. They usually be 30.00 dollars and up ... You can upgrade in future.
