Broke Youtuber with 200k subscribers - What should I do?

Hey Warriors!

I haven't posted here in years.
Was super engaged in marketing from 2009 until 2013 when I accidentally became a Youtube prankster. Lol!

I have over 200k subscribers, getting 300k views per month but just about 140 bucks per month in ad rev. So... I'm back!

Past attempts at monetization
Built an aweber list of 1300 people.
Was getting 30-40 % open rates. Made a little product about confidence for 19 bucks, and sold 8 of them before I went "this is not working".

I stopped writing emails, stopped paying Aweber and lost the list. There's no way of getting it back is it?

Audience
My audience is 97 percent male, young students mostly, so not rich people. But lots of people who need help with confidence etc.

My USP (unique story penis)
In 2008 I was diagnosed for social anxiety. A few years I made a video called "naked guy picking up girls", so I've gotten many questions about how to overcome social anxiety and talk to girls, etc. It's a great success story for a good sales letter alone.

What I "guess" I should do
  • Build email list - the money is still in the list?
    Throw webinars (?)
    Sell "dating advice" products?

What would you do?

Much appreciated!

97% young male and you having a unique approach to dating advice I think is a winning combination. Move on it before you get to old for that market segment to identify with you.

    My strategy with your situation:
    1. Get a website with .com that is either you (i.e. FirstLast.com) or "dating advice"
    2. Make an opt-in with "10 ways to pick up the date now"
    3. Make a video telling a little of your experience with a "get my 10 ways... here <link>" at the end
    4. Write 3-5 emails (or videos that you email) a week
    5. Create a product with "how to get the date" advice, either a membership (desirable if you can do it in your segment) or a one time product with all the advice.
    6. Look for affiliate products that you can sell to you list

Great advice. I love the way you suggested some real positive products. Very insightful. You seemed to have identified any number of goldmines he's sitting on and didn't recognize. Awesome!

  • You can get the list back if you start paying aweber again for the same account .I am not very sure if they completely deleted your account.Just message their support and tell them about your issue .

Yes money is in the list whatever you are doing always build your list in which niche you are in .In your case it is the dating niche which is a huge market .

I wish you lot of success

That's a shameful advice. And do you honestly think that porn is helping the world? It's destroying the world instead of building it.

With that many views, you could have a callout at the end of each video sending them to your landing page ( this video was sponsored by....)

If you jv with a girl that does the vice versa of what you do, you've doubled your possible client base as well.

Couple that with a 'socially anxious dating site with 'alternative dates', it sounds like you've got a Nice little niche.

Good luck, let me know how you do.

    $19 for a commission???

Are you kidding me right now? No wonder why you are not making good money.

Many affiliates work like that. Heck I was in the same position too.

If you are going to get more customers through your marketing, this is what you funnel should look like:

Front end product: $49-$99 (This should be RECURRING)

Upsells: Another $100-$500 in commissions (Offer another related product after the front end purchase).

You can earn HUNDREDS of extra commissions if you offer your new customers an UPSELL.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10936804].message }}
  • Upsells, etc are great in concept. How would he apply that to 18-25 year old males who probably don't have that much disposable income? Unless they are "rich" - I can't see any guy that age spending $500 "learning" to date. (He'd more likely spend the $500 "for" a date if he was into that kind of thing before getting a book on it).

Unless he was desparate (most are not around that age, because they figure they have lots of time, etc) - not going to sell. Most guys do use things like tinder, POF, etc.

You need to find a affiliate product that matches best with your audience. You can also try several to find out which convert best.
Then include links in description and end of video itself

It looks like you're busy, showing off your long penis to girls, collecting numbers etc. than doing business. Just spend less time in bed. You can make money without being a vulgar. Porn businesses are better for you, no doubt. Set up a xxx site and drive traffic, do not know if Google would allow it, I mean linking a porn site to YouTube.

You shouldn't concentrate on looking for that "one" big thing to do. You should be concentrating on setting up many different income streams while at the same time getting your name and brand out there and building your popularity even more.

You started off on the right foot with the list. I think you should have kept it and if you can get it back, by all means do so. I think at this point it may be too late, but try anyway.

You have a huge YT following and you are undoubtedly able to drive massive amounts of traffic from your videos to just about anywhere you like.

You can go so many ways right now it's not even funny.

First of all, start the list building up immediately.

Either set up a blog with opt-ins forms all over the place or build a landing page and give away an awesome freebie (or do both).

Depending on your niche, you can also monetize your blog with Adsense, but I would monetize it with CPA offers instead.

The dating niche is one of the biggest and best CPA niches to be in. There are some simple name & email submits that pay as much as $12 or more per accepted submission. Four or five of those every day would be a nice income stream to start with.

You can also advertise your YouTube channel, blog, and landing/squeeze pages on private sites such as Plenty Of Fish and you may also be able to advertise via Adwords, Facebook, and Bing, depending on the content of your site. If your sites and videos are a little on the racy side, then you may want to avoid Adwords & Facebook. However, you don't really need them as there are literally hundreds of other paid advertising alternatives. If you are already making high quality videos, why not try YouTube ads out?

Actually, you should be able to generate enough traffic from YouTube and social media alone to build a nice big list. A 30%-40% open rate is really good but the real important stat is your "click through rate." Of the 40% who opened your email, how many clicked through to your offer? That's what you really need to work on improving when you are an email marketer.

With 300,000 video views per month, you can make a lot more than $140. The Adsense revenue is alright, and you should certainly keep that if it's making you money, but from where I'm sitting it looks like you need to open up more income streams.

As I said, the list is key, because even today your email list is going to be your most valuable asset. Next, tap into social media. You should have a fan page or a Facebook group set up for your niche, and also a website is key. I recommend using WordPress, as it has a pretty light learning curve for beginners, and there are loads of plugins that will allow you to add more and more functionality to your site as you build your fan base.

Your WordPress site might be a good place for you to post a weekly podcast (or daily if you have the time and material). Don't overlook the power of podcasting. You can drive loads of traffic almost anywhere you like if you have a popular podcast on iTunes.

You also don't want to ignore Facebook Live or Instagram, either. For instance, I keep betta fish as a hobby, and I have an Instagram account devoted to that. It's my hobby, but being a marketer, no matter what I do online I'm always thinking of monetization. I whipped up a small 10-page report to give away and built a very simple squeeze page about how to get started with the betta hobby, and I have built a list of around 500 subscribers in just about 6 months. This is from Instagram traffic alone. All I do is share different pictures of my fish. This is good for Instagram considering the only place to add a clickable link is in your bio. There's no reason why you couldn't do the same. Even if you got yourself around 1000 subs a year from Instagram alone that would be great.

There are so many opportunities to get free traffic, especially since the OP already has a pretty large, dedicated YouTube following. Let's not forget that Twitter can be another huge marketing platform where you could reach out and get noticed. I like to call it a "business circle." A complete "business circle," in my opinion, starts out with a website that connects to social media and then connecting your social media to media outlets like YouTube, Facebook Live, iTunes, and even Google Play if you decide to develop an app for your business further on down the line.

You may even want to consider creating paid courses and selling them on Udemy & Skillshare. Another way to go would be to put on some low priced paid webinars. Make sure to present fantastic material, because if you really put out good stuff people will share your info and you will be able to take advantage of viral marketing.

As for what you could sell, you don't have to stick to dating advice products. While dating advice products seems an obvious choice, there are other factors involved in this niche. The anxiety niche is huge, as well as the confidence and personal improvement niche. You could sell everything from cologne and male hygiene products to gym and exercise equipment to nice clothes & accessories. All of these things can be tied into dating and "picking up hot girls."

At this point, I think the world is your oyster. You are limited only by your imagination and your work ethic. How many hours are you willing to put into your business to ensure success? Twenty hours a week? Forty? Eighty? It's all up to you and of course, all depends on what else you've got going on in your life at this time.

The CPA idea, I haven't thought about that if I'm ever after quick money.

But I will build a sustainable platform that is linked to me and self help for men, mainly.

cashins, you've been able to identify your target audience which is in the "SELF IMPROVEMENT NICHE" as you mentioned that people want to build their confidence so I will suggest you capitalize on that and monetize through clickbank. I'm sure you can find good products on clickbank in the self improvement niche.

You already have the audience and trust me if they are serious about building their confidence they will buy. Thats just the way it is.

You can also monetize through CPA that way they wont have to buy or pay for anything but just opt in to your landing or squeeze page.

    Hope that helps

One negative with CPA is you're giving your list away. Which means your message gets diluted with all the other people you sent them to.

Of course you're getting paid to give your list away - but it's affecting your future ability to collect money from that subscriber. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. YMMV

Because of this I'd only do CPA after I feel I've gotten everything out of them I could.

      Good point Richard, I agree.

I came up with a plan. Since I know many of the top dating gurus I can interview them, post some of the best parts on Youtube, and they can opt-in to watch the full interview. Then sell their already-converting courses through my list.

        Awesome!

When you interview them, make them look good, so they'll promote that video to their followers (for you).

And host the video on your own site. Even if you serve by youtube (make it available only by the direct link), still put it on your site as the "only" public spot.

        Instead of CPA-losing-your-list, hijack everyone else's ;-D.

If you have 200k subscribers then start making videos, put them on your own site, send your followers there then build a list, sell advertising, find clickbank products that will fit the niche. promote "toys" and VOD

Just a few suggestions, But mostly get them to your own site and on your list

    To me it's obvious.

You create a product detailing how you built your channel in the first place. You've done the hard part so it shouldnt be hard

There are a lot of ways to increase the revenue from your youtube channel. As some people have suggested creating a free product and pitching it at the end of the video (like "if you havn't already make sure you grab my free report on XXXXXX down below") You can also increase the number of opt ins you get by requiring people to share the download link to facebook, google plus, twitter, ect before proceeding to the email capture page. There are a few plugins that accomplish this such as Social Viral Downloader. (If you choose to do this be sure to structure the wording of the download page so the user thinks that sharing the download link is the requirement and the second page with the email submit is like the congratulations page(It also helps opt ins if you incentivise people to share the link by saying that there are limited spots, time, ect) Also on a side note for the actual opt in/ email submit page I have found that your conversion rates skyrocket if you only require an email and not a name and email. Most people use a fake name anyways. From there you can do affiliate marketing from clickbank or create a membership site ( I like membership sites for youtube channels because it is easier to pitch and can be way more profitable. It is easier for people to justify spending $3 a month for something that is a great value and has content posted regularly rather than dropping $30-$40 on something that might work). Regardless of weather or not you do any of that one sure way to increase the revenue from youtube is by applying to run in-stream-ads (More info ) Also you did not mention the engagement you are getting on your videos. Engagement is honestly more important than the number of subscribers you have. Also working to improve engagement also will increase your subscribers as a side effect. I am sorry if this post is a bit incoherent. I am running off of 2 hours of sleep LOL

300K views a month and only $140 in Adsense revenue? Something doesn't make sense there...

But besides that, here's what I recommend you'd do.

Figure out what your target audience's BIGGEST problems or questions are... this gives you intel on what they're willing to buy from you.

Build a squeeze page around the problem that offers them an easily digestible solution.

Send out frequent emails (daily is better) that either pitch your products or sell other peoples products (you can go on ClickBank and find products to promote).

Your problem is your sales copy was probably a$$ that's why not a lot of people bought... or you weren't aggressive enough in your marketing with it.... or your list simply wasn't interested in it.

Either way build that list, sell to them, rinse and repeat.

I recommend STUDYING Ben Settle and his style of "infotaining emails". If you master his style of email writing you can make a ton of money.

    Good luck

Is your ad revenue just from the Youtube Partner Petwork / Adsense?

If so, I would consider joining some 3rd party MCNs in order to get better paid opportunities.

You could also consider some of the endorsement networks such as Famebit or setup a Patreon account to try and get funding from some of your fans if it helps you to create more videos.

    Best,

    Nick

Check out 'adrian gee' youtube channel. He does affiliate promos at the beginning or end of his videos. You could do something similar.

In general, see what other YouTubers with a similar audience are doing to make money. They probably figured out what works. Learn from observation. Don't try to reinvent the wheel.

Try to connect and do Videos with other YouTubers. That's the quickest way to learn. This shouldn't be too difficult as you have a massive subscriber base which will get most people interested.

And if you were selling ebooks and making money you should
    of carried on doing that.

If I was you I would start building my
list and get the info product business up and running again.

For the short term you could take your existing videos, add a call to action of some sort: (( If you like these tips, click the link below )) or whatever then reupload to youtube.

If nothing else direct these viewers to a freebie related to the video to get your list rolling again.

Seeing how you have identified your demographic, you could start adding other videos that appeal to these guys not just the relationship stuff etc.

Best of Luck to Ya !

I'd create an info product and teach people how to do what you did. That's a good 10k right there. After that, I'd explore other revenue models. You can always try to sell your account too, if you're not interested in following this through.

Hello Freddy, i've been a subscriber of yours for more than a year now

I'd say create a personal website or simple blog, Start a daily vlog channel
and create an email list, transform those 200k to email list and then advertise whatever you want

Good luck, don't stop the good videos even if you monetize the channel

    Hey there,

Depending on single stream of income won't make you much. Always go for MSI(Multi Stream of Income). Here I got ideas based on your post to maximize your profits,

    1. Start a Blog with the same niche as your channel and drive traffic to it.
    2. Sell T-shirts based on your niche with some funny quotes on it or with some good design relating to your niche
    3. Start a webinar, drive traffic, sell your own product or affiliate product.
    4. Start promoting apps and websites through cpa offers
    5. You can sell solo ads based on your niche.

    Thank you.
