$550k a year online store

I do small freelance jobs for local businesses. Social media, graphic design, web design and some marketing. All very small jobs. I recently was introduced to a guy who is a public speaker, author, has his own podcast and online store that generates sales of $550k and wants to double that up to $1.1m.

Where would you start with a job like this?

He doesn't have much for content like a blog and doesn't have much of a social media following either.

It's not exactly clear what you've been asked to do for that business, but perhaps my past experience as an IT consultant might offer some ideas. The work you end up doing will likely be very different from what I did, but I find that good consultants tend to have similar processes regardless of what kind of consultants they are.

When I did consulting in the past, I'd start by interviewing the entrepreneur and at least some of his staff. As an outsider the most important first step is to understand the business, its goals, its customers and the people who run it. Often I'd go a step further and bring teams together where I'd facilitate a workshop (or multiple workshops) aimed at soliciting information and ideas.

The truth is there's no generic one-size-fits-all answer to what you should do. It really depends on what the business is doing, where it wants to go and the team that's charged with bringing it there. What you told us is just the tip of the tip of the tip of the iceberg. Who is this guy? What does he speak about write about and podcast about? As he seeks to grow his business, how does he envision that changing? Or does he?

From my vantage point, his goals for growth look more like a dream than a real goal. Everyone wants to double their earnings. But what are the specific goals and specific activities that are going to take him there? If it's just, "I'll do more of the same and hope the money fairies are nice to me", I expect he'll never reach his dream. But maybe he has some ideas for business expansion. Are there new products he can sell? Are there new customer types he can expand his existing business to serve? Are there opportunities for him to reach people in new ways (for example on TV)? What are similar businesses doing differently or better that he can learn from? What other ideas does he have?

I'm not actually asking you these questions, by the way. These are the types of questions you should be asking him and his team. These questions and a lot more. I have no doubt that you'll learn a lot more useful information from a 30 minute conversation with one of his staff than you will from this entire thread.

Once you finally feel like you understand the business, it's time to plan. Here too, while the Warrior Forum can be a helpful resource, but it's not going to give you the plan you're going to need. Depending on the scale and nature of what you've been charged with doing, there are a number of methodologies that might be helpful with your planning. Or maybe you can just get away with writing an email or a memo outlining what you're proposing to do. Regardless of how you plan, however, make sure part of your process involves soliciting feedback on your plan from the entrepreneur -- and in most cases at least some of the other staff too. You want to set expectations for what you can accomplish and ensure that you've correctly identified their priorities in your work plan. And you want to make sure that there is understanding and buy-in at all levels of what you're trying to accomplish.

Nobody here is going to be able to tell you what that business's priorities are; nobody here is going to be able to give you the in depth understanding of their activities or their customers. So again, the first step is for you to find out from them what you should do.

Where are the $550,000 in sales being generated from at present?

What is the average order value?

What product / service is he selling to generate the $550,000 sales?

It's very difficult to advise anything knowing so little about the business and his overall plans to double sales. I mean, is he looking to increase prices, increase product lines or simply double the amount of targeted visitors to his site? Right now, it's pretty vague.

The short answer 'at a glance' would be SEO or PPC - but we don't know if he's already doing them already - so it's very difficult to give any solid advice. Given that you're a social marketer and he's generating little traction on Social, perhaps you should start there.

    Best,

    Nick

Does he know you are asking on a forum how to do something he is expecting you to already be an expert in?

Please share that example with us so that we can take a look, there are a lot of scammers out there saying that they earn a lot of money when they are really earning the same that we are all making.

There is no magic formula for achieving that level of income, its just hard work and improving your skills. I started as a Freelancer a little more than a year ago, the first month I only made 20 USD, and now im making almost 2000 USD, its a hard way, is not impossible, but is not easy either.

In other words, you have no idea what you're doing but are hoping to make a quick buck so you're turning to the WF to teach you what you pretend to be an expert at?

I would love to know how he did it too. I've started an online based IT Support and I'm not still puzzled how to get leads. We have a pretty good team and combined we have over 20 years of experience. I would love to know if a Joint Venture or how to properly market the company. I have done PPC so far and not a lot of traffic.
