Need help on best way to capture optins

Hi Warriors,

I have read some reports on this long time ago (lost link) but I would also like fresh opinions from you.

Here is the deal:
This is a general question, but specifically I am thinking of selling a new product and I would like to build a list at the same time. From what I see on the thousands of info products I browse I basically have three choices:
1) Sales page. No opt-in. All the traffic is lost except the buyers.
2) Sales page with opt-in as well. Few buy some optin.
3) Squeeze page with free incentive. Sell through email campaign.

What is your favourite method? Why? Does it depend on the market targeted?

I tend towards #2 as the vast majority of pages I see.
If I do go with #2 then what kind of opt-in form to use?
Most people use a combination of an opt-in form on the side of the sales page or in the middle AND a "drop down" widget.

How about the ones that appear when a user tries to leave the site?

How effective are those annoying forms (drop-downs and/or exit ones)?

Your personal experience and links to specific courses (paid is fine) would be greatly appreciated!

Also, code snippets to use, timing (how long till it starts dropping down), anything.

You may want to look in to Butterfly Marketing software. You give away something of value for the optin and the person becomes a member and affiliate of the site at the same time. NicheSecretsRevealed.com uses the Butterfly software so you can take a look there to see if this is what you need. I am not sure if the software is available at this time so you would have to check on that.

My choice will be no 3, as I can upsell them over and over again.

You can create a squeeze page to do that, learn how to create a squeeze page to start your Internet marketing.

Use video, like what Marc advised, as it will increase conversion. Also add in the bonus with picture.
